Incredibly disappointing title

The historical literature on the Cold War in Latin America needs a counterbalancing conservative voice like Dr. Brands but he does not deliver. United States complicity and support for dictatorships and mass atrocities in the Southern Cone and Central America was on such an unbelievable scale in the 20th century that a facile "anti-imperialism" has long been a dominant narrative in the field. As Brands seemingly laments, hardly anyone in Latin American studies stands up for U.S. interventionism anymore. Indeed, the body count of right-wing U.S. backed regimes, according to historians, numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Today, no one argues with a straight face that the Soviet bogeyman was really on the U.S. doorstep in Guatemala in 1954, the Dominican Republic in 1965, Chile in 1973 or El Salvador in the 1980s (to name but a few McCarthyite moments in foreign policy). With ever greater declassifications of CIA and State Department documents each year, our picture of U.S. actions throughout the hemisphere has become ever clearer. The drawback of this interpretation is that much of the internal complexity and regional dynamics driving the Cold War in the region have at times been occluded by a narrowly conspiratorial view of history in which Washington and Langley have all of the agency and the Latin Americans themselves very little. Brands, a security studies scholar pushes back against the liberal consensus and produces a somewhat more nuanced synthesis of the old anti-communist yarn, with a pox cast now on both houses. The problem with this book in my opinion is not Brands' conservative politics or his overemphasis of the nefarious Reds in the American "backyard," but his supposed "research." Brands apparently came to write this book knowing his entire argument in advance and his narrative is simply the classic blow-by-blow of "crises" and "conflicts" which punctured the latter half of the 20th century. All of his so-called archival research--carried out at multiple archives in several countries--are simply quoted or punched into the footnotes in order to validate a series of well-known truisms. Not one of the documents seem to have been rigorously analyzed or used to elucidate a single new argument or claim regarding "Latin America's Cold War." The secondary sources are used in much the same manner. While it appears impressive at first glance, anyone remotely familiar with the literature will quickly find out "there is no there there." Very disappointing. Hopefully next time, Brands decides to bite off a smaller, more digestible slice of Latin American history on which he can carry out more rigorous research and a less superficial engagement with the work of other historians.

Brands vs de riguer

Regarding Latin America's Cold War experience, Brands takes on the dominant narrative that the US was a bad guy.
His task is not easy. There are flaws, which I will also not go into in great detail in the interest of keeping the review short. He's looking at a region that has wild variations, as anyone who has traveled through the Andes can attest. He also crams his work into the Cold War, though in all countries there were factors pre-dating the Cold War that need to be considered.
That being said, he directly contradicts established experts in the field, and while he makes some critical omissions, he successfully challenges the accepted narrative. This is an important contribution, because while the US did often support bad people/systems based in its fear of communism, there were also numerous examples (which I won't go into, lest I spoil his points) of the US doing the right/moral thing.
Anyone who is a student of the Cold War in Latin America, or modern Latin American History, should read and OWN this book.

Sweet story

I have to say this was a pretty sweet read for me. I actually ended up reading it in one night. I loved the two main characters Jake and Danny, their small town love story was so endearing. I enjoyed reading about them.

Danny and Jake were high school sweethearts, Jake was two years older than Danny. Everyone was expecting they get married, but Danny wasn't ready for that kind of commitment. She wanted to get of their small town and experience big city life. She ended up leaving one night without even a goodbye. Jake was devastated and it changed him. All he ever wanted to do is forget about Danny. Danny ends up coming back to town after her relationship and job ended. It was a fresh start for her. Seven years have passed since she has seen Jake and she is scared to death. Will they finally have closure? Has Jake forgiven her? Will they finally get their happily ever after or does Jake have other plans for Danny?

This book had so many sweet moments it will make your heart melt. I enjoyed reading about these long lost lovers reconnecting. Their feelings never faltered. They both just lived their lives never forgetting what the other meant to them. Not only is this a story of loving and losing you first love, but also finding them again and moving on. I love how very protective and understanding that Jake was with Danny. Once he found her again there was nothing that was going to stand in his way. Danny was so sweet and caring, but independent and strong at the same time. They both come from wonderful families and have strong values. They have some road blocks in the story, ones that neither could of suspected. Their story was very captivating, I was rooting for them through the entire book.

I am so glad I got the opportunity to read this light and refreshing story of loving, losing, and finding that love again. I would recommend that is you are looking for a sweet story with a heroic cowboy then this is the book for you. Seriously who doesn't like cowboys.

Brought back fond memories

From the very beginning, I was enthralled with this story line. It brought back such bittersweet memories of my own high school love. I haven't thought of him in a long time but when I started reading this book, I was transported back to the age of 17 and was madly in love, all over again. The memories brought back were welcome, even if a little painful. I loved reliving those days, every minute of it. I love books that can touch my life so deeply, so profoundly, like this one has! Kudos to the writer; she did an excellent job of drawing me in and helping me connect with the characters on a personal level.

Enjoyable read

Considering my first Novel by Jaden Wilkes was a dark erotic romance, I was surprised by how mainstream this story was. Pleasantly surprised, I might add.

For most of the story, I liked Danny's confidence despite her nervousness of seeing Jake again. She had the right blend of boldness mixed with a little bit of vulnerability.

Jake seemed stoic whenever we weren't privy to his thoughts. I loved that he could still feel tied up in knots around Danny.

Their history was presented in small doses through their memories of happier times, so I believed the love they once had for one another, but I also understood Danny's struggle with having to choose between getting out of her small town and becoming Jake's wife versus spreading her wings.

It didn't come as a surprise that Jake was seeking a little payback for what she'd done to him, but it showed his maturity that he was able to reel himself in and not go the route of an eye for an eye. In the seven years they'd been apart, I think their chemistry was even stronger since they'd both lived through some heartaches. I liked the glimpses of them when love was still young and untainted, but I also enjoyed their journey into becoming who they were as adults.

Their road to happiness wasn't a smooth one. Between Jake's ex-wife and Danny's ex-boyfriend, they stirred up enough trouble to threaten the newly formed relationship. Somewhere past the half way mark, I began to dislike Danny a little for keeping Matt's texts a secret from Jake. I understood why she did it, but it just seemed like a weak excuse considering she'd been so firm and confident up until that point. I thought the unfortunate misunderstandings through lack of communication were a bit forced when they could have easily been cleared up had they talked to one another. I just felt that they were in a stronger place to deal with problems when everything went down. Alas, I have to admit that the drama made for a sweet and ridiculously romantic ending though.

Reverse Cowgirl (I love the play on words alluding not only to the sexual position, but also the essence of who Danny was - from cowgirl to city girl and reverting back to her roots) was a sweet and very hot romance with a bit of suspense and drama to make you care about them. And it kept you hoping that they'd realize what a gift that second chance at love was.

Note: The book had quite a few errors (tenses, homophones). I purchased my copy in June 2014. maybe it has since been updated.

About the Author
CAROLYN J. KROEHLER is a professional writer and editor who has received her sociological education “on the job.” Before her work on Sociology: The Core, she contributed to criminology and criminal justice textbooks. She edited and helped with the writing of a guide to academic success for college students, Straight A’s: If I Can Do It, So Can You. At the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, she wrote public education and technical materials about water quality and other environmental issues, including a book on drinking water standards. Her writing experience also includes several years in a college public relations office and writing and editing for the Lancaster Independent Press. She earned her Ph.D. in botany at Virginia Tech and has published in the Canadian Journal of Botany, Plant and Soil, and Oecologia. Mike and Carrie live in Blacksburg, Virginia, with their children Edmund and Camilla.

Michael Hughes is Professor of Sociology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). He received his Ph.D. in sociology from Vanderbilt University in 1979 and has taught introductory sociology over the past 34 years. He also regularly teaches courses in minority group relations, deviant behavior, the sociology of mental illness, and data analysis. From 2000 to 2004, he served as editor of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior. He has held positions as research fellow at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (1992–1994) and research associate at Vanderbilt University (1980–1982). With Walter R. Gove he is the author of the book, Overcrowding in the Household. His research interests in mental health and mental illness, race and ethnicity, and crowding and living alone have resulted in over 60 professional articles published in a variety of journals. In 2004–2005, he served as president of the Southern Sociological Society.

This book explains things in the most complex way with few examples to go with the difficult definitions. Some examples do not even fit their definitions - I honestly think these were missed because the editor was so bored reading this book. There is no glossary and the index is missing a lot. I love sociology - half of the books in my library are sociology books including two other introductory sociology textbooks, but, because it takes so much time to decipher what is being said, I look forward to reading The Core like I look forward to a gum scraping.

The condition of the book was great, but this book has so many grammar and spelling errors I can't imagined how it got published. Many student in the class agreed that it was hard to ready the book and fully understand it. Other than that amazing did a great job shipping on time and the book was in good condition

Good deal to rent instead of buying and having another used text book around. Very complex writing so I wasn't in love with this text and nor did enjoy it's content but then again I, yawn, am not a huge fan of sociology.

Don't miss out on this Royal Marriage Market

So if you have ever read my reviews, it is no secret that I can easily be swayed by an intriguing cover or blurb. I have always had a soft spot for princess stories and glitter - and look we have both right here! You have marriage in gold glitter in the title and a soft romantic, dreamy scene on the cover *sigh*. When I saw the cover, it just made me remember all of those times I used to play dress up and put on my sparkly tiara and want to be a princess. When things seemed simpler. But that was the romanticized version of royal life. The putting on the pretty tiara and twirling around version. And as we see here in Heather Lyons' Royal Marriage Market, while I was twirling around dreaming of being a princess, the royals may have been doing just the opposite, and wishing to be just an average person...

We find out that every 10 years there is essentially a big old meat market amongst the royals to hook them up and sell them off... or I mean of course it comes off much classier amongst the royals. And much more traditional and dignified. So let's try this again. "Every decade, the world’s monarchs and their heirs secretly convene to discuss global politics and social issues—and arrange marriages between kingdoms." There is just one little problem, or make that two. Wait maybe that is three or four.. hmmmm. Well you see some of these heirs aren't so thrilled with these antiquated traditions. They have witnessed their parents loveless marriages and are not looking forward to repeating those same mistakes. They want to marry for love and NOT because their parents are looking for an advantageous alliance. Theses heirs may have their country's best interests at heart - but NOT when it comes to their own hearts!

Royal marriage market centers on Elsa, Hereditary Princess of Vattenguldia and Christian, Hereditary Grand Duke of Aiboland. Both have decided they have no interest in having a match found for them here. And trust me Elsa let's Christian know this from the get go! But that one crash meeting leads them where nether of them ever intended. What will win out? Heart or crown? Tradition or love? Monarchs or heirs?

Royal Marriage Market completely enchanted me. It was a charming story that was full of romance and humor with dashes of drama thrown in as well. The characters are all well written and you can't help but get attached to them and root for them to find their happily ever after. I actually hope to see some of the side cast get their own stories in the future (HINT HINT!!)

I definitely recommend this book. It was a fun read that I easily lost myself in!

The PERFECT modern day fairytale!

This book is brilliant! Everything I love about romance, royalty, and sassy heroines shines bright in this story. Royal Marriage Market will draw you into a frustrating world of royal matchmaking, a world that is full of very few hits and more than enough misses. There is duty, honor, heartache, and passion spilling from this tale. Heather Lyons does an incredible job of sharing a beautiful love story, one that shows the stark line between duty to country and following your heart.

Where do I even begin with this book? It plowed into my top reads of 2015 at the end of the year and it stole my breath. When you start to read this story you have a little bit of an idea of what is going to happen based on the general genre of royal romance, but the story is perfected in the details. The details make this story phenomenal and allow the reader to dive deeper into Elsa and Christian’s tale. Taking traditions from hundreds of years of monarchy and translating that into a modern royal romance gives this story a push into something that every young fairytale lover longs to see. Elsa is a strong woman, one who is refreshing with a feisty personality and spunk for life that gives her a fresh outlook on her role and her country. She is opinionated, kind, loving, and adores her country, while abhorring some of the harsher traditions she is expected to uphold. Christian is a man determined to make a difference in his country. He is strong, intriguing, and so darn alluring. There is so much about him that appeals to Elsa but the situation throws a wrench into everything. These two strike up an unlikely alliance in a desperate situation and it blooms into something epic love stories are written about.

Royal Marriage Market is an insider’s look into the matchmaking of royalty in the modern times. It is about keeping hold of who you are in the midst of emotional chaos. It is about love and the cost of that love but more importantly about the desire and fight to stay true to yourself. There are so many times when these characters could have laid down and taken the brunt of the harsh reality that was forced upon them, but instead they stood for change and a better future of happiness. Every character you meet in this story shares a different personality trait of the situations you read in this book. There are manipulators who are crass and heartless. There are negotiators and blackmailers. But there are also so many innocent caught in the crossfire that long for love but find themselves in a do or die situation. Heather does an incredible job of expanding this story to include so many different royals and situations that weave into a well thought out and provoking story. Elsa and Christian are the main focus but their story it so deeply woven into the fabric of those around them, royals and non-royals alike.

I could have read a million more books featuring Elsa and Christian’s story. I would have loved to read hundreds of spin-offs giving me a glimpse into what happens to all the other people involved and the paths they decide to take. This story was fabulous! I don’t think I can completely communicate how much I loved it and how excited I am for everyone to read this book! Heather Lyons has proven in this book that love is magic and the power to follow your heart is pure and transformational.

True Love and just what I needed

When Heather Lyons writes stories, I usually want to crawl my way to a corner and rock back and forth before ever even touching the book. The cover glares at me on my Kindle whispering, "Read Me" over and over again, until I pick it up and start rocking for an entirely different reason.

I am not the type to want angst in my stories, I know they are necessary, but I don't go and seek out these monsters on my own. Heather is the only author I continually make an exception for. Her books are like drugs that pollute my mind with whimsical creations that will leave me breathless and senseless.

Royal Marriage Market threw a wrench in this whole thing. While reading, I kept waiting for the angst to make me crawl into a hidey hole, not wanting to continue because I can't take it. What I got, was a romance straight out of a fairy tale with the only magic being the act of true love itself.

Elsa and Chris were sort of regular people with complicated lives, but that didn't stop them from causing anarchy amongst the most barbaric display of power among the royals. They pushed away the idea of everything they hated about the market and found themselves in a companionship neither of them saw coming.

I cheered for them from the very beginning. I wanted to cause harm to the people who didn't want the same thing I wanted. I got the drama, but not to the extent I was preparing myself for, which was a relief, a smooth balm on my damaged soul caused by Heather herself haha.

I really loved the secondary characters, they gave more depth to the story, and made things more complicated, but also added to the love. I am still holding out hope Lady Autumn runs away with Lukas in a total scandalized, gossip-worthy affair!

I can dream can't I???

And can we take a moment to talk about the sexy, swoon, OMG did I just get pregnant reading this??, scenes! There were so many almost moments leading up to the big sha-bam, I thought my lust was going to explode right out of my vagina! So very good!!

Heather can create worlds, destroy lives, and also give us a romance so enriched in plot and detail, it grabs your attention and leaves you a swoony mess by the end. She wears many hats and I am so glad I get to experience the depth in which she wants to share her worlds through her written words.

I may have PTSD from her stories, but I am so glad I pull up my big girl panties to read her books. I just wish I would have stopped and read this one sooner, so I could have been introduced to Elsa and Chris a long time ago...

Sequal to "The Peter Pan Syndrome"

Many women who have read "The Peter Pan Syndrome" by Dr. Dan Kiley were left wondering how they could start to improve their own situation in the relationship. Dr. Kiley attempted to answer these questions with this book. Although mostly a series of case studies it did have some good points. Chapters included potential victims, falling in the Wendy trap, denial and effects, hitting bottom, and how to resolve the Wendy Dilemma by becomming a Tinkerbell. I strongly recommend reading this book after the "Peter Pan Syndrome" or you will be confused with some of his references.
The last chapter on transitioning to a Tinkerbell was the most enlightening for me; it was one thing that the first book did not cover in enough detail.

It helps to understand that you do not change the other person; you change yourself. Then you realize why your life has not been working.

How do I put it, instead of "mother to the world"- professional martyr, she has been telling people "NO". It has also brought sort of a more relaxed warmth and acceptance into our relationship and shared history.

The new G. Schrimer/Hal Leonard vocal editions have been greatly improved. This excellent, 200 page volume features 31 arias appropriate for beginning (Vedrai, carino) as well as advanced (Jeux veux vivre) voice students. The arrangements and piano reductions have been updated for accurancy, and optional ornaments are included. A section at the beginning includes notes on each opera as well as literal line by line trandlations-there are no rhyming "english versions" of the words listed in the score itself. It's a great book for both beginner and expert singers

I really enjoyed singing songs from this book. It has a collection of songs from operas such as "Carmen", "Madama Butterfly", "La Boheme" and many others. They come in a variety of languages. It has songs that work for pretty much any level of voice-- from beginners to experts. It contains songs such as "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "The Willow". It is definately worth getting if you are an opera fan!

Not bad at all!

This collection has over 30 songs from 23 operas (Classical to Contemporary period). It contains 18 pages of Notes and Translations where each song is described (the Act and Scene it was taken from, what is mainly going on in the opera before the song is sung) and a line-by-line English translation.

True to its title, "Arias for Soprano" doesn't concentrate on a particular kind of soprano. If you are just developing your voice (and therefore still experimenting), this is good for you since it has a little bit of everything except arias for a mezzo-soprano (there's a separate book just for them!). Of course, teachers with students having different vocal qualities will benefit from this book.

Unlike "The French Song Anthology" and "The Lieder Anthology", the bars are not numbered. But at over 30% off of its original price, and with free shipping, it's not bad at all.

It's all about backgrounds and tones

A complement to the first book in this series, this edition focuses on backgrounds and effects. That said, it covers action lines, perspective, and toning with insider techniques such as drawing motion lines using a thumb tack, etching, applying tone, and creating tone effects. I also rather liked how it used actual panels from manga's printed like Those Who Hunt Elves, Angel Arm, and Lucky Rakuun.

This book is more for the aspiring mangaka who will use the knowledge of toning to great use unlike the average artist who just want to learn the drawing style. This book has four pages of nudity near the end as it covers shading the body using tones. If you're buying a toning book for a younger reader, get the Pen & Tone Techniques edition which has no nudity present. Other than that, is you're not adverse to nudity, then this is the best book to start learning how to tone.

Even though these series of book have quite some years since first published, undoubtedly still are a great asset in any artist library. Concise info and detailed explanation on ever topic. Easy to understand and a lot of reference material. Five stars, no less!
