I couldn't register the book online but I emailed Kaplan and they helped me out. The problem is that I have acces to that account only for a year. Which isn't fair really, no one tells you that before. You pay for it so the account shouldn't "expire". However,the book is very good and the studying plan makes it so much easier.

First did a blind test(they had me take an initial test to see where I was) and had scored a 68. This is out of 99.
They scheduled me to head to MEPS 3-4 weeks later and figured out what the MOS I wanted, required for scoring so I studied those courses.
Took the test and called up my recruiter to find out what my score was and ended up getting an 84.

I tried studying at least a chapter a night, but there were a few times I was too tired from work, but also took my book with me to read during lunch break for about 40 minutes.

The score I needed to get, which was a combined total between the subjects was a 100 out of 150. I got 123.

The book definitely helps in covering everything, but if you know your MOS score goal, try to focus on those subjects.
I would've undoubtedly gotten a higher score if I'd have read the others, as skipped what I considered not high in my priority.

This book is great for learning the ASVAB!!!!

What I found most helpful was the flashcards that were included. I would push for even more flash cards in upcoming versions. They really are great questions on them as well. First I would read the section (which is covered in great detail) and then use the flash cards to reinforce.

Some to add might be more on nutrition. Maybe have a flash card for each type of vitamin or mineral. As well as the different types of rocks and other areas that may take readers a while to grasp and retain the knowledge. They might read it once and understand it at the time, but it doesn't really become a fact until they see it time and time again. That's where the flashcards value comes in. It re-enforces the text.

You might even make so many of them that you can include the ones you want for sure in the book, and then have it as maybe an add-on if they want all of your flash cards. I find them to be a very good method to retain knowledge. I used to actually read college level books and make my own flash cards as I was reading the book. I think flash cards are a great way to learn.

The book itself is awesome! Every question has a detailed answer. There are tons of practice tests. I plan on taking one everyday and thoroughly going through each question and reading their answer.

Have yet to check out the videos but I will get around to them. I have been using Youtube tutorials for getting this information via video but I am sure the videos are worth checking out.

Not all that great.

For me, the book worked because our instructors used many of the vignettes and questions on our exam.

However, for the general student of medicine, this book is ridiculous. For example, after presenting a short patient vignette, it asks for a differential. Working with friends, I tried to come up with three reasonable diagnoses given the symptoms. The book would give three, but two of the three would be completely UNreasonable. It would say something like, "Diagnosis #1 relies on findings of A, B, C, and D. However, our patient does not report A, C, or D, so this diagnosis is unlikely."

I didn't find that to be at all helpful.

Additionally, the multiple choice and matching questions are quite easy, probably too easy to be useful for anyone more than a few months into your training, regardless of field (RN, PA, MD, etc...).

All in all, I think this book is a waste of money for most people. Just read the margin notes in Bates, and review the tables at the end of each chapter, and you'll get a much better review than this will provide.

This is helpful for a general review, but it absolutely does not take place from reading all of the textbook material. The only way to do well on the tests is to have read the text book, focusing on the pink highlighted areas.

This workbook is a great tool, the case studies are very complete, the rationales provided in the back of the book are helpful in understanding the differential diagnoses.

Rutgers dean of humanities Fabian (The Unvarnished Truth) aims to explore "the tension between skull size as measures of racial difference and as markers of common humanity." Unfortunately, while she touches on this fascinating point on numerous occasions, she never fully examines these issues. She provides information about some of "craniology" 's founders, the oddest stories and contradictions, but leaves the reader to synthesize it all. The first half of the book is largely devoted to the work of Samuel George Morton, a 19th-century naturalist who amassed almost 1,000 skulls and used them to argue that there were five distinct races of humans. While Fabian reports on Morton's passion and methodology, and frequently says his work was the basis for the field of "scientific racism," she doesn't allow readers to get inside Morton's head to understand his perspective. Fabian writes most eloquently about the post–Civil War national dissonance, when the government was working aggressively to bury the war dead, while also promoting the unearthing of Native American graves so skulls could be collected for "scientific" use. However, by presenting more anecdotes than insights, Fabian will leave readers unsatisfied and searching for the big picture. 30 illus.

Ann Fabian is dean of humanities and professor of American studies and history at Rutgers University. She is the author of many books, including, most recently, The Unvarnished Truth: Personal Narratives in Nineteenth-Century America.

Sometimes great -- but frustrating

I read this book to learn more about the history of scientific racism, phrenology, and pseudoscience in America. Fabian provides some fascinating glimpses of all of these. At its best, her book places these subjects in a broader context through passages that are filled with insight, and here the writing soars. For example, on phrenology:

"Population doubled in the United States in the first thirty years of the century and increased almost threefold in the next thirty. Practical-minded Americans didn't have to understand the subtleties of cranial location or intricacies in debates about the material basis of ideas to appreciate tools that smoothed their way through relations with strangers -- easy answers to hard questions. Is cruelty part of his character? Deception behind his plans?"

There's a wealth of information in this book about many aspects of 19th century America, even beyond the main topics at hand. It's worth reading for these, and for colorful details about a large cast of real-life characters.

But those expecting any real conclusions about the role and legacy of craniology in American race relations will be disappointed. Fabian's commentary shifts from one skull collector or collection to the next. It explores various connections and influences but never weighs them against other factors to clearly indict or absolve the skull collectors. In place of a methodical evaluation, there is a recurring expression of moral outrage that never leads to any deeper analysis of the harm done by the skull collectors. This makes the book feel incomplete just when it might have become both more moving and more enlightening.

Irene Nowell, OSB, is the director of community formation for the Benedictine sisters of Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas. Irene Nowell, OSB, is a Benedictine of Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas, where she has lived for almost sixty years. An accomplished theologian and biblical scholar, Nowell is a past president of the Catholic Biblical Association and the author of Numbers (of the New Collegeville Bible Commentary); Sing a New Song: The Psalms in the Sunday Lectionary; Women in the Old Testament; and Pleading, Cursing, Praising; all published by Liturgical Press.

Women in the Old Testament

If there are approximately 1,400+ individuals named in the Bible of which there are approximately 110 women, this book addresses 39 of them. The Author does a superb job establishing the environment, the customs, the challenges of these women and also does a wonderful job enhancing your understanding of them as disciples of God. You come away from this book with a much deeper appreciation for these women and a much deeper appreciation for the importance of women in Salvation History and in God's kingdom, despite the fact that mostly men wrote the Bible!

I received this book as a gift. Thinking it would be more of an encyclopedia of Biblical women and a boring read, I set it aside for a while. I couldn't have been more wrong. "Women in the Old Testament" is a fascinating book about the ways in which many women of faith were used by God in a patriarchal society.

This book shows how God used women of various backgrounds, lifestyles, ages, skills and experiences to protect His people and fulfill His promises whether in a supportive or major role. Seeing the courage of these women is empowering. Reading their stories gave me a more-rounded Old Testament understanding.
