5 Stars: An amazing piece of work
This book is the only one of its kind for the new FRCR part 1. As such it is indispensable. As a bonus at the end it includes an excellent short guide to answering the written part of the exam. It gives a list of headings to use as templates for answering the critical reading and is an excellent place to start.

With a great coverage of the basic physics concepts needed for the Part 1 FRCR exam, this book should form the foundation of everybody's revision. About the Author
Scott Robertson has almost two decades of experience teaching how to design, draw, and render at the highest college level. He has authored or co-authored 11 books on design and concept art. In addition to books, he has co-produced over 40 educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop, of which nine feature his own lectures. For several years, Scott chaired the Entertainment Design department at Art Center College of Design. He frequently lectures around the world for various corporations, colleges, and through his own workshop brand, SRW. In addition to teaching, Scott has worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from vehicle and alien designs for the Hot Wheels animated series Battle Force Five, to theme park attractions such as the Men in Black ride in Orlando, Florida for Universal Studios. Some of his clients include the BMW subsidiary Design-works/USA, Bell Sports, Giro, Mattel Toys, Spin Master Toys, Patagonia, the feature film Minority Report, Nike, Rockstar Games, Sony Online Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Buena Vista Games, THQ, and Fiat to name just a few.

Thomas Bertling has an extensive background as a successful industrial designer and engineer, with a varied array of clients such as Disney, Samsung, and Whole Foods, and a diverse portfolio of completed products on the market, from state-of-the-art medical innovations to combat-ready military vehicles. This hands-on expertise gives him a distinct approach and remarkable edge in addition to being an acclaimed design educator. With substantial experience teaching all levels of perspective sketching and construction to both university students and corporate clients, he has created comprehensive and proven curricula rooted in practicality and real-world application. He currently serves as Director of Entertainment Design at Art Center College of Design as well as teaching several courses and training faculty members.

Fantastic Primer on Perspective Drawing.

This is a fantastic reference for anyone who desires to learn the basics of sketching in perspective. Perspective drawing is the key focus on this book, but it also does a good job at showing how perspective in your drawing compares to scenes in reality.

There are other books out there that teach things that are shown well in this book, but the thing that I think makes this one unique is that it brings so many different aspects of perspective, sketching, and object design together in one place. And while it doesn't include every technique available to a designer or artist, this explains a tremendous toolset that you'll be able to use (very quickly!) to produce most anything you can imagine. Isn't that the goal?

The quality of the book is fantastic (I got the "paperback" version) with some of the thickest paper of any book I own. Each page is in full color (most publishers would have cut corners as many of the images only include spots of color and the temptation to make it greyscale had to be high).

Also included is a link list to video lessons. There is an upcoming app that will allow you to scan images from many of the pages to trigger the videos, but it's not yet available on iOS or Google Play store (at least it didn't show up as linked from the QR code and separate searches). The link list works with your computer or a tablet. I'll update this review when the app becomes available.

If you are unfamiliar with Scott Robertson, I highly recommend searching for him in YouTube. I've been following him for years and have 7 of his drawing, rendering, and designing DVDs from the Gnomon workshop. This book and the videos is a nice companion to those, but much less expensive! (Those DVDs were $30 each). Even with that background, I'm very happy with Scott's latest book.

LOVE this book

LOVE this book. I bought it because I wanted to expand on what Scott teaches in his videos, but when I got it I realized that it is more valuable than any book I got in college. The perspective lessons alone make it worth the price of admission so to speak. The other night I was trying to figure out a particularily complicated angle/foreshortening problem. After I was about ready to give up, I flipped through the book and used Scott's techniques to work it out. Can't recommend this enough. Anyone who wants to get better at technical drawing - sci-fi or otherwise - would do well to making this part of their reference library.

Wow, packed with information!

When i first got it, i was shocked to see how thick it was. More pages than i thought, seems very thorough of the subject.
I skimmed through the pages, and boy you can tell so much effort is put into this.
It may be difficult to grasp, but you have to reread and take your time trying to understand - you will get it eventually.
The book have many sketches with guidelines, so you have to train yourself to be able to "read" what/how he did it (naturally as you read the book) in order to learn each lesson.
The most amazing aspect of the book is that some section of the book have a video to go with it (online url/link or through electronic scan with ipad or something). It will show and explain certain things much clearer, so i recommend you watch the videos as well.

I was skeptical about it being $34 (on sale too), but after seeing how much information it provides, it is certainly worth it.
Glad i bought the hardcover as well, this is a great entry in my collection of fundamental drawing books.

I really do like this book. It's quite small but covers a lot on Java 8 Lambdas, Interfaces, Functions, Streams and Parallel processing. I like that the author explains these features simply and concisely, covering how to use each as well as why they are used and the benefits of each. There are plenty of code examples to aid understanding. I do think the prose could be improved though to flow better. I would have knocked off a half star if I could have but this didn't warrant a full star off. It's a good book to get up to speed quickly and I highly recommend it.

As the author mentioned, this book is for you if you have to get quick overview of Lambda Expressions in Java 8 over the weekend. You have to be an experienced Java developer to understand the concepts. This book has examples and snippets of code that would give an overview of changes to Java 8 APIs due to introduction of Lambdas. It also gives an exposure to functional programming. I recommended the book to Java developers who work for me to read so that they can be up to date with the changes in Java 8.

One of the best!

I can't say enough great things about this book. As the title says, it is mostly a review of German grammar, not an introduction to it. However, the information is so clearly explained and it is presented in such an amazingly simple manner that I wish I had had access to it when I first began studying German. The book has made me realize that German grammar isn't nearly as complicated as most grammar books seem to make it! For example, Donahue shows that there is really only one declension table that you need to memorize, rather than the plethora of tables that those other books would have you learn. If only I'd known that from the start!

The book is organized into four "Phases" (I. Fundamentals of Verbs, II. Fundamentals of Case, III. Building on the Fundamentals, IV. Advanced Work with Verbs), which include a total of 24 chapters. Each chapter is devoted to a particular aspect of German grammar and there are a large number of exercises in each chapter that allow you to practice the material you have just learned (the answers to most, but not all, of the exercises are in the back). This book is especially good at dealing with all the different German verb tenses and relating them to their English equivalents.

All in all, I highly recommend this book for intermediate students (or any advanced students that may want to brush up on their grammar). Although I believe it would also be invaluable to beginning students, the book is not really organized in the right way for it to be an introductory text. It lays out the information all at once, and a beginner could easily become overwhelmed. Also, the book assumes you already have a basic knowledge of vocabulary and simple sentence structure. However, if you use this book as a supplement alongside a more traditional introductory text, you will likely find the grammar lessons in this text far clearer than those in your textbook!

A must for intermediate German learners

This is the best grammar book I have ever used for any foreign language. Perhaps it is the relative complexity of German grammar that necessitates a book like this, but I'm certainly glad to have it. I bought it as I was approaching the intermediate level, and it is indeed an excellent review of all of the grammar concepts I'd learned so far — in fact, I wish I'd had it earlier, as learning the few remaining new grammar concepts was much better with the help of this book. However, I imagine it would not be as helpful for a complete beginner, since there is no review of vocabulary (though Donahue does make a point to keep the vocabulary relatively basic so as not to distract.)

The method of explanation Donahue uses is so different from anything else I've encountered; it truly seems like he has taken the time to find new and better ways to explain difficult grammar concepts. He somehow manages to be both succinct and thorough at the same time. As another reviewer notes, he combines many traditional tables for adjective endings into one super-table which is refreshingly concise, while aptly noting that the concept is best learned by acclimating to the sounds and not by visualizing a table. (After all, being able to reproduce a table on a piece of paper may help on an exam but will never help you to form sentences on the fly.) He is very straightforward about everything, with practical tips like this one to sum up a longer explanation: "The bottom line: You will only seldom need to use the adjective 'jen-' or the pronoun 'dies'."

He also takes the time to answer side questions that might be of interest to English speakers: for instance, why do we learn Subjunctive II before Subjunctive I? Is the passive voice discouraged in German as it is in English? Why is das Mädchen (the girl) neuter and not feminine, and do Germans consequently refer to a girl as an "it", as would be technically correct? Finally, includes helpful tips on avoiding pitfalls specific to English speakers, for instance, the difference in how Germans use studieren (study) and lernen (learn).

All in all, this book is an absolute must for any German learner who is reaching the end of the beginner phase. I use it frequently and highly recommend it.

beats any grammar book I (a German prof) have used in decades

I have taught with this book at undergraduate level for years—since it first came out. Not a single student has ever wanted to sell it back and all have found it incredibly helpful. An answer to everyone who said "I feel like my German needs some work" The (late) author was my professor and he put it through multiple versions before allowing it to be published so the reader would have an optimized learning experience. It functions perfectly as a self-study or independent/distance/correspondence course because all the explanations are in English and it includes a glossary and keys to all the exercises except the essays (which can easily be left out without diminishing the usefulness of the book). Currently in revision to include a testbank, but no publication date for that newer version, so I am still using the old one to great effect. It differs from its competitors by being very down-to-earth in its explanations. You don't have to be a grammar whiz or a linguistic to understand what is being explained.

During the fifth century following the withdrawal of the Roman military establishment from England, the armed incursions of the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and others of the Barbarian tribes from across the North Sea increased, and soon became a surge. After a relatively short time the subjugation of the British was complete and England a patchwork of warring domains and isolated settlements. Yet within the space of two centuries the English (as the tribes may collectively be called) had achieved a sense of themselves that may fairly be described as nationhood. It is the evolution of this sense and of the distinctive characteristics of England and the English that gave it form and substance which Geoffrey Elton traces through twelve centuries. The result is the first one-volume history of the English nation from its origins to the present for over twenty years: it is a tour de force.

Enjoyable, but a little too tightly packed at times

I will start off by saying that on the whole, I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It presents a very nice overview of the English people, paying particular attention to items of political and religious importance. The development of the common law, the history of the relationship between King and Parliament, and the geopolitical involvement of the English are all covered in detail. The author also takes the time to point out in a few instances where other modern authors (mainly ones attached to Marxist thought, it seems) have min-construed some event or writing and tied to it greater significance that it likely deserves.

Additionally, there is a fascinating discussion at the tail end of the book on 'English' versus 'British', in terms of how one could/should think about the people involved at any given time in their history. The discussion, in particular on page 233 and following, cites examples of where it was really the 'British' who did something (such as building a global empire, with the help of Scots, Welsh, and Irish in addition to English - thus, British), while at the same time the English were still a distinct 'people'. As Elton puts it, they were, "...a nationality but not a nation...". I point this section of the book out because it was both something I'd never thought about before, and something that made a lasting impression on me. It is, I admit, rather mundane but having always though of the British as such, to see where distinctions could and should be drawn was enlightening!

I will nitpick just a bit and say that there were times as I read this book that I felt that I needed extra information to really understand the arguments being laid out. I was mildly frustrated at the occasional assumed knowledge, potentially contrary to the claim of 'accessible' highlighted on the back cover. At other times, I felt the text moved too fast and I wanted more information.

It is truly a whirlwind tour of a millennium, and despite my mild frustrations I enjoyed this book and am glad I acquired it!

Finally a ruling class that is also a people?

most of the people written about in this series have either vanished or have been absorbed into a larger nation/state but the English are both a people and a country so i realized the author is tackling a big order.Almost as hard for me to review it with anything that sounds sensible.You can't end this book with,they just faded away but we still have their(law or buildings)!So the English were originally a ruling class that developed into a nation so how did they do it?Maybe the question should be asked in another hundred or so years.It would have to be defined from more than "cradle to grave" socialism since about every modern nation is there and i notice how the authors of this series avoid the topic.Since these island territories have strict water boundaries maybe these warrior/farmer bands early decided to either try to get along or if not that then bury the enemy deep or use more moderate yet equally harmful forms of violence to relegate him to obscurity or trivial amusement.An intersting paragraph or 2 on British lawyers and how over the years they fancy themselves as knights defending the barons. Initially though they were more related to the greasy,(sleazy)religious cleric bureaucrats of the Dark Ages who defended the "flock"from the nobles.A little sleaze in defense of the downtrodden,just the thought gave me some from fresh air. Also being an Island nation,it would be easy to become socially,economically and ideologically isolated,a dangerous situation ripe for foreign invasions,so the oceans since prehistoric times are the lifeline.I had heard it mentioned that British zeal at making colonies is an overcompensation for fear of isolation.Elton states the English temperament as "litigous and difficult to rule"and from the read on this book the final tally of who the English are is being continually defined but a close look at political,economic,social,and religiuos movements since prehistoric times show a people not inclined to take a back seat for anyone.there are alot of interesting interpretations in this book.For one,it shed light on the "War Hawk" movement of the early 1800's in the United States. The War Hawks wanted to go to war with Britain in 1812 over numerous issues including the "impressment of sailors to serve on British ships".I always thought this stretched credibility (what there weren't plenty of sailors)?Elton has somewhat cleared this up by reminding me that Britain had abolished the slave trade in 1803 and actively intercepted other ships to search for contraband and slaves.Maybe the "War Hawks" were really upset that the British were interrupting their slave trade and those "impressed sailors" never really impressed the War Hawks at all.This book has alot of these type interpretations which one can misinterpret to his own ends,the mark of a good book!

Low Fear, Easy Entry Into Couples Talk

I could certainly tell the John Gray influence. I thought the book would be good for couples where the guy wasn't quite interested in jumping into the relationship talk. Which would be about 90% of the guys I know. The book is easy to get into, short enough not to get boring or pissed off about working on the relationship. A couple could decide to do a topic a night or a topic a week and enjoy talking and laughing over a glass of wine.

Many guys, and probably gals too, need an easy, introductory way to get started. I think the book could be a low fear, easy entry point for many couples. And then that could lead them into more books or further progress. I like the low fear entry point as I believe that "fear" stops a lot of couples from talking. I hope others enjoy the book as much as I did.

"Useful Rules--even for Veteran Relationships!"

"My wife and I have been happily married for 34 years, successfully raised two sons to manhood, and survived two career changes (each). The other day, however, she had a tough day at work, wanted to talk about it, and I forgot Janice Hoffman's "Rule #2: "Listen without Interrupting." That made for a tough night. We didn't get to this point in our marriage without effort, however, so the next morning, we read Chapter #2 together, and then we talked about it. Thanks, Janice! Your helped us to see ourselves as the other sees us, and you've offered up some mighty tools for making our "veteran" relationship even better!"

Janice has created the perfect guide for happy, lasting relationships

If I had a copy of Relationship Rules by Janice Hoffman earlier in life it may have saved me a couple of divorces. The “Rules” are really just what works in developing a relationship and keeping it alive over the long term. Relationship Rules is an easy read, clean and to-the-point. I had the good fortune to interview Janice on my show.

Janice clearly knows about relationships and is entertaining and fun.

Great research

This book offers very deep understanding of the harms of porn on our society. It's the first of its kind, providing research from many different perspectives and on different aspects of our society. Very interesting and powerful.

Confirming the Obvious

Being Catholic, I always enjoy it when secular research confirms the obvious. The Witherspoon Institute is obviously conservative in nature, but the research here is 100% objective. This is a must-have for any apologist.

Wake up! America has been transporned.
By "Strange Affair"
This book should have a much wider audience. The price puts it out of the range of most people, and the high level of discussion furthers the problem. A simpler book for the masses is needed based upon the material in this book. We have a problem, Houston. No one wants to admit how devastating the porn problem is. Our children are being bombarded daily with doses of sexuality that prevent them from living out that most important period of our lives innocently - childhood. The gutter is everywhere folks. Its not Bedford Falls, its Pottersville gone to pots. America needs to take a good look at itself and weep bitter tears, for we have fallen, and the giant that we are means that the fall to the very bottom might take a while but we are well on our way. And the the farther you fall, the greater the pain when you finally hit the bottom.
