Smart Antennas for Wireless CommunicationsIS-95 and Third Generation CDMA ApplicationsPrefaceThis text has been created to satisfy the growing demand for knowledge in two emerging areas: adaptive antennas (also known as smart antennas) and Code Division Multiple Access. CDMA was commercialized in the early 1990s by Qualcomm, Inc., a San Diego, California, company that pioneered the use of a classic military concept for the burgeoning cellular telephone industry. Adaptive arrays, first conceptualized in the 1960s with the birth of digital signal processing, only recently have become practical for deployment; the intense growth rates of wireless services around the world are beckoning for their commercial use.This text has been developed through years of research by the authors and their colleagues at the Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group of Virginia Tech and at Bell Communications Research. Our goal in creating this text is to provide fundamental and practical information for practicing engineers, students, and researchers in industry as well as in academia. To complement the book, the second author was asked by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to provide a compendium of selected readings of key journal papers dedicated to the topic of smart antennas. The compendium, when used in conjunction with this text, provides a convenient single source of literature for use in classrooms or industry short courses.The material and organization of this book stemmed from the first author's 1995 Ph.D. dissertation on the subject of CDMA and smart antennas. Since then, a great deal of work has transpired in the field, including the adoption of the IS-95 J-STD-008 CDMA standard, the new 14,400 bps voice coder for Rate Set 2 channels, new methods and models for implementation and modeling of smart antennas in CDMA, and the stringent wireless E-911 position location requirement 125m, 67% of the time imposed by the Federal Communications Commission. We have worked diligently to include up-to-the-minute information in this text. The text is arranged into 10 chapters. Chapter 1 provides an overview of CDMA and smart antennas; it includes a glossary of terms and a fundamental treatment of synchronous and asynchronous CDMA. Antenna and propagation fundamentals, as they relate to CDMA systems, are also presented. Chapter 2 provides valuable practical information on the IS-95 J-STD-008 standard, and it provides in-depth descriptions of all of the CDMA channels. Also included is an actual link budget design for a PCS CDMA system. Chapter 3 provides fundamental material on adaptive antenna arrays and array theory. The concepts of beamforming, weighting vectors, and fixed-beam vs. adaptive beam antennas are covered. Chapter 4 applies this material to specific CDMA implementations that may be used for today's IS-95 and future CDMA systems. Chapter 5 combines the concepts of CDMA and adaptive antennas to derive analytical expressions that allow wireless system designers to predict the coverage and capacity gains that adaptive antennas provide in a multi-cell CDMA system. This chapter derives classic results that have led to system capacity predictions using CDMA with and without adaptive antennas.Chapter 6 provides an overview of multipath and Direction-Of-Arrival models for wireless channels. A host of propagation models which are useful for analysis and simulation of adaptive array algorithms are presented. Chapter 7 then describes complete details of one multipath propagation model, the Geometrically Based Single Bounce Elliptical Model, which provides complete characterization of a multipath environment in microcell/picocell applications. Chapter 8 describes optimal spatial filtering approaches that use both adaptive arrays and characteristics of the CDMA signals. Building on the fundamentals provided in Chapter 3, this chapter presents optimal methods that null interference while maximizing the carrier-to-noise ratio of a desired user. Chapter 9 describes the algorithmic techniques for determining the Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) of a signal in a multi-user interference environment. Such capabilities will be required for position location techniques. Chapter 10 concludes this text with a thorough treatment of position location algorithms and approaches. Appendix A covers the derivation of the Gaussian Approximation and its many derivatives for spread spectrum systems. Other appendices provide information that engineers and educators may find useful.The authors wish to acknowledge the invaluable assistance, skill, and patience of Aurelia Scharnhorst, a research associate with Virginia Tech's Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG), in formatting this text. The ingenuity and hard work of Zhigang Rong, Rias Muhamed, and George Mizusawa are represented in parts of Chapters 8, 9, and 10 of this book, as portions of their mastersâ theses have been used with their gracious permission. JOSEPH C. LIBERTI, JR. holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech. He is currently a Research Scientist with Bellcore in Red Bank, New Jersey, where he is working on smart antenna technology and radio channel characterization for a variety of applications including CDMA, PACS, and other forward looking wireless systems.

THEODORE S. RAPPAPORT is the James S. Tucker Professor of Engineering at Virginia Tech, founder of the university's Mobile & Portable Radio Research Group, and Chairman of Wireless Valley Communications. He holds three patents and has authored, co-authored or co-edited 12 books, including Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice (Prentice Hall PTR).

Not a bulky book and yet impressive

Needless to say: this book will certainly be one of the fundamentals used in both, undergraduated and graduated curricula, as it covers the roots of adaptive and smart antennas technologies, among other topics. The way it explains the essentials leads to experts and non-experts to get into this field very quickly if also attending onto the cited references. I highly recommend it and the price is worth of it.

I used this book as a source when I did a project in my Wireless & Mobile Comm. course. My topic was Smart Antennas for wireless applications. The book was very helpful. It is well written, organized and easy to read. It provides a lot of research issues and engineering solutions for Smart antennas for next generation wireless systems. For better or worse, Hauerwas is an occasional writer, and this is another collection of the occasional pieces for which he is known, organized around a cluster of issues related to pacifism and pacifist response to the events of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath. It does contain an engagement with Bonhoeffer, one that will prompt many to wish it were more sustained. Bonhoeffer and Hauerwas are natural allies on the matter of faithful performance, and the combination of Bonhoeffer, Hauerwas, and the late John Howard Yoder, facilitated by Hauerwas' many pieces on Yoder, makes for a potentially revolutionary conversation. This collection, particularly its first part, constitutes a tentative, fragmentary, and provocative first step toward including Bonhoeffer in such a conversation. Living the Christian Faith (and answering his critics)

As a person who has read a lot of Hauerwas's work, the themes in this book did not surprise me at all. What did surprised me was the responsive feel that many of the essays had. In this book, it seems like Hauerwas was very aware of the criticisms against his work and feels compelled to respond to them. Hauerwas has always been invested in Theological disputes. However, in most of his older work, he was the one who served as a critic of another's thought. Lately, though, much of his work has been defending his own ideas (which he would probably claim are not his own, but a faithful expression of the Christian faith). This book is no exception.
Hauerwas has been criticized for being anti-modern, anti-liberal democracy, and sectarian. In Performing the Faith, he seems to be saying "yeah, but so what" to the first two. He is against modernity and wants to move away from foundational ways of thinking becasue he sees it as harmful to the faith. He is against liberal democracy, particularly in its most typical recent defenses, because it replaces the Christian story with a new non-story (the story that you don't need a story). It seems, though, that it is the sectarian charge that he takes most offense to. In this book particularly, Hauerwas seeks to make clear that the distinction he draws between the church and the world is "permeable" and for the good of the world. You find a desire for the church's witness to the world to be such that the world knows it is the world and desires to be the church. His emphasis on Bonhoeffer is important because Bonhoeffer experienced the tension between the church and the world in unique and compelling ways.
Buyer beware: this is a book of Hauerwas essays not a book on Bonhoeffer. Only the first section deals with Bonhoeffer. Not surprisingly, Hauerwas's read of Bonhoeffer makes Bonhoeffer sound a lot like Hauerwas (and Yoder). That does not necessarily make it wrong, but it is worth noting.
I believe this is a wonderful defense of the ideas Hauerwas has fought so long for.

The Joy of Stumbling Upon Hauerwas

Performing the Faith is the first book I have read of Stanley Hauerwas and I feel as though I have met a new friend. I am particularly pleased to have stumbled upon him because, while I have found many excellent biographers, historians, philosophers, scientists, social commentators, etc. to read, Hauerwas is the first contemporary intellectual evangelical Christian that has captured my attention (perhaps I have not looked very hard). Hauerwas is candid and relevant. He seems to love the give and take of a good debate. He concedes ground when appropriate, but holds his own with wit and good humor.

In this collection of essays, Hauerwas tests and expands his views against (and with) Augustine, Aquinas, Wittgenstein, Yoder, Millbank, Stout, Rawls, Barth and a host of others, including, of course, Bonhoeffer. Though Bonhoeffer is named in the book's subtitle, the heart of the book is found in the essays in part two: Truthful Performances. "What is overlooked by both subjective and objective accounts of faith is the sense in which Christian existence is first and foremost and activity - a performance, if you will." Hauerwas, with James Fodor, effectively use the analogy of rhetoric, musical performance and improvisation to illuminate "the general art of living well under God." In the next essay, Hauerwas uses Wittgenstein's work "to help rediscover the frightening beauty of the particular," to which the Christian is called to be a faithful witness. This means engaging in "life-forming practices . . . without seeking false comforts in a world of contingency."

Particularly good are Hauerwas's essays on September 11, 2001. Hauerwas is uncomfortable with the fact that "we get to call the violently secured order that makes our lives possible - peace. Only terrorists refuse to accept the peace our order names." His discomfort is exacerbated because "we know it is possible to love our enemies. Otherwise why would Christ in the Sermon on the Mount ask that we so love?" He asks, "Are we to make Christ a liar? If we do not think it possible to love our enemies, then we should plainly say Jesus is not the Messiah." What is the truth Christians are called to bring to the table? What is the Christian witness to be in a world of violence? Hauerwas doesn't offer up simplistic answers but he does concede "Yoder [in his book The Politics of Jesus] convinced me that if there is anything to this Christian `stuff' it must surely involve the conviction that the Son would rather die on the cross than have the world to be redeemed by violence."

I recommend Performing the Faith to anyone who is interesting in thoughtfully considering what it means to be a Christian in the context of our new-world-at-perpetual-war-order. I look forward to reading more of Hauerwas.

As Dr. Gayle Scroggs points out in the book's preface, one impetus for the writing of this book was the authors' collective realization that many women already naturally practice positive psychology every day, as we interact with family, colleagues, and friends. The book begins in the past by describing this landscape and its natural history, including highly adapted plants and animals, native peoples and geology. It turns to the present to describe the current conditions, much of it based on the decline of sagebrush and those animals dependent on sagebrush. It depicts the increase in cheatgrass and the changes in range fires. The book looks to the future as it describes the hopes, new ideas, and collaborative efforts of federal agencies, ranchers, miners and local groups to save this fragile ecosystem. Carefully researched facts are checked by experts in the particular subject. The writing is positive, with no desire to bash anyone or assign blame. It focuses on successes rather than failures. Its central message is the sagebrush steppe and the Nevada people addressing its ecological problems.
