About the Author

Gaston Leroux was a French journalist, short-story writer, and novelist, and is most famous for his acclaimed novel, The Phantom of the Opera. A student of law, Leroux turned to journalism after spending his inheritance on a lavish lifestyle. Over a decade of work as a court reporter and theatre critic for the L ?cho de Paris served as inspiration for his series of successful detective novels featuring Joseph Rouletabille, an amateur sleuth, and Leroux s contributions to the French detective genre are considered as significant as those of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe. Leroux died in 1927.

A fitting follow-up to "The Mystery of the Yellow Room".

If you enjoyed "The Mystery of the Yellow Room", you will probably enjoy "The Perfume of the Lady in Black". This novel was very well written by Gaston Leroux (who actually included himself as a character in the early pages of the book!). You must read "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" before attempting "The Perfume of the Lady in Black", as it is merely a continuation of the events from "Yellow Room". To say that Gaston Leroux has a few surprises in store for you with this book would be an understatement, as he gives new meanings to the events from the first book. For me to say anyting further would be unfair to a prospective reader. While "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" was a five star book without question, "The Perfume of the Lady in Black" falls just short of that lofty plateau. For those who enjoy a well-written mystery, you could scarcely do better than Gaston Leroux.

This villain won't stay dead

I've watched many a Hollywood movie with a villain who won't die. Gaston Leroux has created just such a human monster: Frederic Larson - thief, murderer, escape artist, and master of disguise.

Larson appeared first in The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1908), then in The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1909). Both are early examples of Golden Age detective fiction, and both are classic locked room mysteries - but they're hardly defined by these categories. Leroux's style is uniquely eccentric and flamboyant.

The Perfume of the Lady in Black is set in a fortified medieval castle on the Cote d'Azur. While sunshine and flowers are generally cheerful things, in this Gothic atmosphere the glaring sea, the blazing sunlight, and the overwhelming aroma of fiercely colorful blossoms take on sinister significance. With everyone wearing sunglasses, there's an uneasy sense of uncertain identities. And in truth, there may be a murderer in their midst...

A sense of dread and confusion hangs over the narrative - only intensified by the odd behavior of the hero - the supremely intelligent amateur detective and journalist Rouletabille. This teenage prodigy is a bundle of nerves and emotions. His feelings for his mother rival a character out of Proust (whose masterpiece was in the future). And his feelings for his father are frankly Oedipal (though Leroux had probably not read Freud).

I dare not even hint at the plot, because the tangled and tortured relationships among the main characters must remain a secret for you to discover. Suffice it to say that the book is a feast of crime, deception, love, passion, and psychological terror. With occasional flashes of humor.

And the description of the fragrance of the Lady in Black is unforgettable. I doubt if there's ever been a more sensuous description of a woman's scent.

I really liked this edition (Dedalus). There's an afterword instead of in a preface - no risk of spoilers! And the analysis of the book, the author, and his contribution to world literature is very well done.

Fantastic Sequel to The Mystery of the Yellow Room

This is a great mystery, but you need to read the book before it, "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" (also a great read). Both are a lot of fun, especially remembering that these were written over a hundred years ago. I can see why the author Gaston Leroux was influential to the likes of Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr, among others.

Beautiful Mess

I chose to title this "beautiful mess" because of the impact I know personally from the author. A woman, who is insanely brilliant, fought through probably the most traumatic stresses and trials of faith nobody should ever have to endure. I have no trouble by saying that her faith grew stronger through these trials because she is a devoted Christian. I'm so thankful she recommended this book to me after enduring my own personal issues and attacking my own demons. This book will become widely known as well as the author. Most likely Dr. Phil will call her cell phone or she's already called him lol. On a serious note, the time I spent with her family impacted my life greatly and amends are in place because she was like a mother to me as well. Well done mama. Keep fighting. The love you have for others should be publicly known!

Compelling Read!

A compelling read and a Must for all! Couldn’t put it down once I started.

How scary to accept the fact that regardless of the good intentions, we might be doing more harm than good to the children of today. Epidemics that wreak havoc on our children that have become so commonplace shouldn’t be accepted. They should be questioned – “Why have these diseases become so commonplace?" "Are we treating the cause or the symptoms?" Something we should all seriously consider and perhaps just listen to that nudge deep down in our hearts that tells us “something just isn’t right”. And to think - Some of these diseases stem from the same cause and can be so easily treated if someone would listen!

What a heroic story of a mother’s love for her child, and what one person can do to try to make a difference.

A+ This book was gripping; I felt like I was along for the ride with Cody and Ella. For those of us looking for answers around this bizarre illness, the writer openly puts her journey on display. I have a family member who has been confronted with a possible PANDAS diagnosis and this is as far as I have made it in my research; I am reading the Day Lily book next.

AMAZING!

The book is really well put together. It is large. 9" x 11-1/2". Nice glossy front and back. A few good pictures in the front but the book is totally about his music. It is 200 pages of the musical notes from each song on the double "History Past Present and Future Book 1" CD. It is for piano, guitar and vocal.

This book is just what I was looking for. I'm a beginner on the piano and am not familiar with classical music that so many play. This book is perfect for me. I am totally familiar with the music so if I hit the wrong note I'm going to know it and then I'm also able to find the correct note. The book is large and I'm able to write the alphabetical notes a - g above each line. I'm hoping to eventually be able to read music better and faster but for now this is a good way for me to be able to learn and play as I go along. It is so satisfying to be able to play things that I recognize and already know the tempo to as well. There is no guess work as to whether I got the right notes I either did or I didn't and I know it. It is making it much more interesting and enjoyable to learn note reading this way. This book and its music makes me want to play better and more often.

In addition - the obvious. It is Michael Jackson's music from the History album. It has a great mix of previous hits and then the new ones as well. It is almost as if you can see his method for putting his songs and notes together. I saw other books with his music but I felt this one had more of the songs I would be interested in learning how to play. This was my first music book and I feel I made the right choice as I am not disappointed!

It was a great value, the price was good - less than the printed price on the back of the book. I ordered enough things so shipping was free. It was brand new. When I first received it all of the page corners were bent even the back cover just a little bit, but still it was brand new, not used and I felt it should be perfect to start. Amazon readily exchanged it for me. I got the new one two days later and then was able to return the bent one with no additional charges. As usual Amazon was very easy to work with!

It is amazing to hear his beautiful music coming from my very own fingers. Of course it is not nearly as beautiful but I'm hoping one day it will be.

I could not be happier with this music book than I am. It is amazing!

This applies to everyone, because you *should* be selling your skills and abilities...

I first met Ken Wax a number of years ago when he spoke at Lotusphere, a conference for IBM/Lotus technology professionals. I didn't have anything I needed to see during a particular time slot, so I decided to drop in on Ken's session which was on "selling" your technology and skills to customers. I walked out with a completely different mindset than I went in with. Ken shared a number of insights on communication and presentation that I still use to this day. When he contacted me and asked if I would like to read and review his new book, it was a decision that required no thought on my part... of course I would! The Technology Salesperson's Handbook: 114 World Proven Lessons and Tactics distills down his tactics and knowledge into quick and effective techniques that you will use every day on the job. It doesn't matter if you're not responsible for cold-calling clients to try and sell them something, either. You *are* selling yourself to your end-users, and these same principles apply.

Inside the Mind of the Customer; The New Reality of Selling; It's Called the Sales Process; The Technology Salesperson's Toolkit; Mastering the Meeting; It's All in the Presentation; Advancing to a Higher Version Number

Although I'd recommend reading the whole book first and then referring back to certain areas often, each chapter is set up with a number of short tips and techniques that you can focus on to help you resolve vexing problems or improve in certain areas. For instance, the first chapter titled "Mind of the Customer" includes subheadings such as "What's the View From Across the Table?", "How Do People Absorb - or Not?", and "The Rational Model and Other Lies." If I look at the subheading for Rational Model, he explains what's really going on in the decision-making process. The "Investigate, Analyze, Map To Needs, Weigh Choices, and Decide!" model is what most techies think is going on. In reality, that's just the tip of the iceberg. What you can't see are the distractions, miscommunication, politics, desires, biases, and so on. It's those factors that are really driving the process. If you don't understand that, you're toast in terms of making the sale. I see this constantly when people complain that one technology was chosen over another in their company, even though the incumbent technology is a far superior value. It's the stuff under the waterline that drives the decision, and you have to understand that before you can understand why the decision came down the way it did.

I was personally changed during my first session seeing Ken present when he talked about how people absorb information. Using the Listen > Grasp > Fit In > Check > Next technique, I learned I couldn't just spew out facts as fast as my mouth could move. I had to give the person time to hear what I said, make sense of it, place it in context with the other information they already know, see if it still makes sense, and only then are they ready for the next important point. If I don't give them time to work through that process on important items, then I lose them early and any hope to influence them is lost.

I also highly recommend his section on advancing to a higher "version number." As technology geeks, we're used to asking what version number of the software is being run. What we don't know and don't think about is that we can apply that same concept to ourselves. If I was Thomas Duff 3.0 last year, have I done anything to upgrade myself and my abilities to be able to tout the new and improved Thomas Duff version 4.5? Or have years gone by, and I've only had a point upgrade during that time to version 3.2? That twisted my view of personal improvement, to think that I should be upgrading and improving my capabilities rather than just keeping the same version year after year. It's as the old adage goes... do you have ten years of experience, or one year of experience repeated ten times?

While the title of the book may be The Technology Salesperson's Handbook, the reality is that every technology professional needs to be selling what they do and the skills they bring to the table when working with *any* customer (even if they're a captive audience). This is one of those books I'd recommend without hesitation to anyone who is serious about being successful over the life of their career. Not only will you feel more comfortable when it comes to dealing with your customers, but you'll end up building those close relationships that make you a partner to the customer instead of just another option.

Incredibly approachable, insightful & enjoyable

The Technology Salesperson's Handbook is as delightful and entertaining to read as it is insightful, thoughtful and packed with amazingly generous advice. Ken's writing style is conversational and natural, as if you're sitting across the table from him, enjoying a cup of coffee. It is evident that he practices what he teaches. So many people writing business books these days take themselves far too seriously, but Ken, for all his wisdom and experience, seems to have checked his ego at the door and traded it in for a hearty dose of empathy for his readers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it not only to salespeople, but anyone who wants to learn more about the invaluable art and power of storytelling.

I just came back to direct sales after years in channel sales. My company provides scads of training including, of course, Solution Selling. The big gap in training is found right here in this great book. Practical tools you can use immediately and easily. I've already reaped the benefits of applying the tools. Also, an added benefit to this book - it's interesting and funny. So many of these other books are dry and painfully boring. Huge thumbs up.

About the Author
Tim Lapetino is a writer and award-winning creative director/graphic designer. His design and branding work has been published in more than a dozen books and magazines, and for nearly 20 years he has helped organizations and companies tell compelling stories through design and writing. 

He wrote the upcoming design history book, Art of Atari, and co-authored the design inspiration book Damn Good: Top Designers Discuss Their All-Time Favorite Projects. He has also written for HOW, Geek Monthly, RETRO, and other publications. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Museum of Video Game Art (MOVA), and is dedicated to writing and working at the intersection of design and pop culture. He resides in Chicago with his wife and two kids.

Like many small children of the era my first exposure ...

Like many small children of the era my first exposure to what now is known as the Atari 2600 was the box artwork. Seeing "Adventure" , "Space War", "Casio", "Space Invaders" on the wall at my local Toys-R-US they just popped. An early memory of mine is of opening my Indy 500 on X-Mas 1980. Playing it for hours with a buddy then staring at the box/box art before going to sleep.

The book is nicely done. I do like how the boxes warts and all are presented, after all that is the stuff of our memories. As modern made [cheaply] in China books go this Deluxe Edition out box and inner book appear to have been designed with maximum nostalgia in mind - something that they very much succeeded in doing.

Thanks to the author and his crew for this treasure. Hoping there is a Vol 2 featuring Intellivision some day. Highly recommended!

Art Of Atari - Get this now!

If you are like me and enjoy looking at Atari box or cartridge art, then this book is for you. The book is beautifully constructed. The deluxe edition includes a slip case that pays homage to the cartridge boxes, leather binding and over 300 pages of amazing artwork and drawings. This is a must-have for any Atari enthusiast.

Some of my greatest childhood memories are thanks to Atari. All my friends seemed to have one, my grandma bought one to keep us grandkids entertained, and the hours upon hours of gaming that I enjoyed. And that's just the Atari 2600. Which is why I decided to purchase this Deluxe edition, which I understand is now out of print according to Amazon. This book is a testament to the 2600. Everything is first class all the way here, with each turn of the page an artistic explosion of memories. To sink another $80 for an Atari-related product after all these years seemed almost second nature to a guy like me who had the privilege of growing up in such a great era.

The only downside is that the upper corners of the protective sleeve were a bit dented due to poor packaging, with the book itself having a small dent in one of the corners as well. For the money, I'd prefer to not have dents but I don't think I can get another one.

At either rate, I'm still giving 5 stars because I am thrilled with this book. Definitely for addicts like me.
