It traces the emergence, from the French Revolution onwards, of a distinctive sense of Europe and Europeanness. At the same time it explores the growth and impact of the new phenomenon of the nation state - one of nineteenth-century Europe's most powerful legacies to our own time.

The narrative and analysis are enriched and enlivened throughout by a wealth of evidence 'from below'. This is not just the official history of constitutions, institutions and ruling elites. The authors are alive throughout to the varied fortunes of Europe's diverse peoples and classes - rich and poor, urban and rural, young and old - and, not least, to the changing impact of gender on the ways of life available to them.

Smart about the First Ladies

After buying and reading "Smart about the Presidents", I was very interested in reading "Smart about the First Ladies". Like the other "Smart About" books, I was very intrigued with this one, too. The facts about the first ladies was educational, and I loved the pictures and illustrations. I have shared this with my grandchildren. I highly recommend this book.

Wrath of an angry god

I strongly recommend reading the first two books of this trilogy first.

By now we have seen that the lion-like Raknii people have to improve and update their space fleet, as humans have superior weaponry. But the Raknii are superior in numbers and have a predatory mentality. This book tests whether there can be common ground between the warring factions.

Halbert the sentient computer has learned a lot from his human friend Dieter and is working on making himself mobile by such means as illegal clones and cyborgs. He still wants to be able to tap into any computer in the galaxy.

I enjoyed a new Raknii female who is the despair of her father, too contrary and self-possessed for any male to offer to marry her. The albino admiral Drix decides that he could not do better in a wife and offers for her paw, though it must be said he values her connections equally. At the same time this lady N'raal is a product of her society which does not educate women or expect them to fight, unlike humankind where we see female senior politicians and admirals among the list.

There are fewer battle scenes than in the earlier books, but when the humans are using hollowed out asteroids as mobile battle platforms, the results are spectacular. Also we get little fun or quirky items, great characterisation, some genuine romance and a couple of weddings. What more do you need in a space war series?

An excellent conclusion to the series.

This was a most excellent conclusion to this trilogy, there were some points were it did drag, however it soon picked the pace back up and there were epic battles. Yes some of these plot lines we have seen before on the other hand Gibson did an excellent job in weaving them together for a great story. I was happy to see the Admiral and boobs survive and thrive as I was saddened by the loss of JT. I suspected back in book 1 that Bat had a relationship with Bozo aka Hal that he was hiding. A job well done Gibson.

Loved the series and I want MORE!

I've read the whole series and loved it. Lots of battles for us military SF fans, but overall, I really loved the characters, both alien and human, and the humor just kept the series fun and easy to read. For me, these were pure entertainment, which is what I look for. I sincerely hope the author will return to the series and write more!

Analyzing Manufacturing Processes "101"

As a quality assurance manager whose educational background is in management rather than engineering, I had the privilege of using this book as a college text.
I cannot say how well I would have fared by using this book as a stand-alone tool, but it was a valuable tool in my college Design of Experiments course.
We use DOE to a point in my company, a plastics molder. In our business, however, many quality inspections are of the attribute properties, such as appearance, rather than actual, measurable variables. That is no fault of this book; however, it is frustrating that I am not able to utilize DOE more.
The book delivers its message fairly clearly, keeping in mind that I went through it page by page with an experienced instructor. It is not necessary to be a mathematical wizard to use this book, although an understanding of basic statistics would be helpful.
Anyone involved in a manufacturing operation with mutliple variables in the process would be advised to learn more about DOE, and this book would be a valuable resource, particularly for those with an engineering background.

A Very Practical Introduction to Design of Experiments(DOE)

This book was recommended to me by a quality manager of long experience and it was a very good recommendation. Having aquired an engineering degree before DOE became very widespread, I have largely had to educate myself in DOE methodology. "Designing for Quality" is written in plain language and has easy to understand directions and tables to use both in designing your experiments and analysing the resulting data. With this book, I planned, conducted and analysed data from several experiments before I ever had the assistance of a knowlegable practitioner of DOE. When I gained such assistance, I had my results and conclusions from these experiments confirmed. I am now Quality Manager for a plant of 650 employees and when I need to teach DOE, whether to an experienced engineer or a novice technician, "Designing for Quality" is the text I always use.

About the Author
J. P. Moreland is one of the leading evangelical thinkers of our day. He is distinguished professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology and director of Eidos Christian Center. With degrees in philosophy, theology, and chemistry, Dr. Moreland has taught theology and philosophy at several schools throughout the U.S. He has authored or coauthored many books, including Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview; Christianity and the Nature of Science; Scaling the Secular City; Does God Exist?; The Lost Virtue of Happiness; and Body and Soul. He is coeditor of Jesus Under Fire: Modern Scholarship Reinvents the Historical Jesus. The Contributors win

I've always eagerly read, listen, and disucussed this very serious matter of ultimate questions: Does God Exist? This book is well edited by Peter Kreeft. Unlike many books of this sort, Kreeft's introduction aids the reader into the debate and if one is new to the questions of philosophy, the background provided become even more important. The debate itself is average. Even though I admire JP Moreland and think he is a great Christian theist, he would receive an average rating. Kai Nielson, however, does a poor job and I agree with another reviewer that Moreland would have been better "stacked" against Keith Parson, one of the book's contributors.
The book's strength are the writings from the editor (Kreeft) and the contributors (Christians: Craig and Willard/Atheist: Flew and Parsons). The contributions are thought provoking and the writers takle the subject head on. Even though I'm parcell to Dr Craig, I think all the contributors did an outstanding job in analyzing the debate. For their comments alone, this book is well worth the time and price.

An interesting, but not spectacular, debate.

In "Does God Exist", J.P. Moreland and Kai Nielsen debate the same topic, but end up talking past eachother most of the time.
Unfortunately, each individual chapter within the book is much too short for anybody to establish much of a case for anything. This is probably the biggest flaw of the book- for it leads to some mediocre exchanges. Despite this limitation, however, some fairly important issues are discussed.
J.P. Moreland presents a fairly strong case for the existence of God by way of the Cosmological and Teleological Argument, and Nielsen barely offers a rebuttal in return. On the other hand, Nielsen offers the Incoherency Argument, in which God is alleged to be an incoherent concept. In my opinion, this is a bad argument, but Moreland doesn't really offer much of a rebutall either. It seems as though both Moreland and Nielsen are arguing in completely different ways and, as Craig notes, there is very little "clash" as a result.
The four extra participants, however, do pick up the slack a little bit. Flew and Parsons (atheist) actually offer some rebutall to Moreland's arguments, which Moreland gets to respond to later in the book (successfully, I think). Craig offers a very level-headed and fair analysis of the debate, while offering additional support for the Teleological argument. Willard's essay is nicely written, although it seems to be a bit off-topic, as he presents his own case for belief rather than analyzing what was already said by Moreland and Nielsen.
Overall, "Does God Exist" is a worthwhile, but not essential, read. There are much better debate books to be found.

A must for those who likes to think about fundamental issues

This book is really a must for anyone who is open-minded and interested in religion and deep, ultimate questions. It is not only of the highest philosophical qualtiy but is also fun and thrilling to read, as one becomes fascinated by the debate.

This debate uniquely features some of the most famous philosophers of religions, the Atheists Nielsen and Flew.Both have a career of active and brilliant atheism, especially Nielsen, who is the most brilliant Atheist since the death of Mackie.

On the Theist side, Moreland plays the major role. Moreland uses excellent arguments, but makes a few minor mistakes. These mistakes are fortunately corrected by Craig, the most brilliant Theist philosopher. Actually the arguments that Moreland uses stem from Craig's research work (Kalam cosmological argument, teleology, resurrection of Christ...) and the Christians would have been much better represented if Craig had had the major role instead of repeating and correcting Moreland. (See Craig's book: "Reasonable faith". the books of Moreland and J. P. Geisler should also be consulted). The presentation of the Kalam argument, of the design argument and of the resurrection of Christ are compelling. On the other hand , the argument of religious experience is subjective and worthless. The contribution of Dallas Willard is disappointing, he kind of simply restates the points in a more intuitive, less formal way.

On the Atheist side Nielsen is very well completed by Flew. Nielsen major's point is to show that the concept of God is meaningless and is very smart in not trying to argue afterwards that "God" does not exist, which would refute his own point about the meaningless of "God". We can see here how Nielsen is superior to other famous Atheist philosophers such as M. Martin, who in his book "Atheism: a philosophical justification" first argues that the word "God" is meaningless, and then ridiculously argues that "God" does not exist! Flew does a good job of critizing some of the attributes of God, yet not His existence. Parson is very disappointing, attacking the design argument with a myth like the theory of evolution (ignoring that it is disproved by paleontology, embryology, biochemistry, see the books of Michael Denton, Michael Behe or Philip Johnson...). He accuses the Christians of scientific ignorance, yet naively thinks that life appeared through processes of natural selection whereas such were impossible before the apparition of life. Parson also grossly fails to understand the time maths of the Kalam argument, and his misunderstanding is ridiculed by Moreland in his closing speech. (Intelligent Atheist refutes this argument, see the debate between Craig and Smith in " Theism, Atheism, and Big Bang Cosmology").

There is also another and shorter part in the book which is a debate between Nielsen and Moreland on morality. Nielsen's point is that one can simply be a moral person without being religious. Moreland argues that the tiny, ephemeral Atheists cannot rationally ground any morality in a huge, blind, uncaring and purposeless universe. Neither can Atheists be rational in helping other people if it is not beneficial to them. Moreland wins easily and brillantely here, but I do not know if it is possible for an Atheist to have any rational basis for ultimate morality (the good of humans), unless one has "an unjustifiable bias towards one's own species" as Moreland points out.

Conclusion: This debate, which features 6 of the most prominent Atheist and Theist philosophers is absolutely unique. It is without comparaison with the old (1948), famous debate between Copleston and Russel. This book is absolutely worth buying. For those who are not scared by a heavy discussion, I can recommend the debate between William Craig and the Atheist Smith in " Theism, Atheism, and Big Bang Cosmology", 1993

Excellent book

I had been working on a 2D RTS game for about 4 months, once I saw this book I was immediately interested. I've been reading the book for about a week now and all I can say is that it was well worth the money. The examples on the CD are excellent. The terrain rendering is done really well, most of my previous experience with books teaches you how to render a terrain and spread on texture over it. Carl Granberg takes this a lot farther by showing how to break the terrain up into subsets so they can be culled. He also shows several techniques using shaders and textures to create really cool looking terrains. The bad thing is that it is going to take me a long time to fully understand everything that is happening. I am so excited about this book that I just can put it down.

I've been making a goal of typing in the code he has and then modifying it in some way so I really understand what is happening. The main thing this book does is it builds a really good foundation for creating a full RTS game. Not to mention the book comes with prebuilt projects for Visual Studio which is something a lot of books leave out. The code is really well organized, and I've found very few errors in it. I have been working on my own framework for my games for a while, and have created several 2D games, but now it is time to incorporate what this book teaches so I can use it to create 3D games of any type. I am really looking forward to the chapter on creating the minimap.

Code needs work

I agree with the previous post.

Since most of the code is not included in the printed book which is actually pretty small it would be nice if the code actually compiled on a modern compiler like VS2005.

I didn't see anything in the book that actually mentioned what compiler or DX SDK the authors used to compile the code but it must've been VC 6 or earlier since the first problem with the code is using for loops with a variable that goes out of scope because of newer scope rules in VS2003 or higher.

Second problem is that most of the code is linked with directshow which is no longer included with DirectX SDK.

If the authors at least included some sort of contact information or webpage at least we could have a chance of getting this code to work but I wasn't able to find anything.

Maybe they could reply to this post.

The only reason I'm not giving the book less stars is that is actually concludes with a game demo is that is pretty damn good almost like age of empires 1 quality. And I've never seen a game programming book with a better quality demo and I own almost 100 or more!

Best book ever written on Direct3D

I am a computer science professor who reads scores of game dev and C++ books every year. I have a really hard time choosing a textbook for many upper-division game courses, and rarely have time to read them all. I was really upset when the book initially came out with buggy examples that would not build with VS2005 and would crash a lot, so I had to shelve it for a couple years. Now, returning to the book again while perusing the Amazon reviews, I find that the author, Carl Granberg, released an update of the book's sources with new VS2008 projects and bug fixes, and everything works great now. More than great...

This is the single best book on Direct3D 9 I have ever read, and I am using it as the primary resource for two courses--DirectX II and Game Engine Development. Here are the all-important topics you will learn here that are half baked in every other book I've read:

1. 3D heightmap terrain generation, with a progression from simple to complex with over a dozen examples of each step the author took while developing the landscape for his rts example. THIS ALONE is worth the price of the book! No other resource explains dynamic terrain as well as Granberg does here.

2. Mesh file modeling, loading, rendering, and animating. ALSO worth the price of the book. It's so well done that Granberg is writing another book just on this topic. Character Animation with Direct3D.

3. HLSL shader programming: glow effects, fog of war, team colors. ALSO worth the price of the book. Very good practical real-world use of shaders rather than the usual (Engel, et al) over-hyped approach to the topic. Easy to grasp due to Granberg's excellent pacing and well-described techniques.

In summary, I was a fan of this book even with the buggy problems here and there in his sources. But now that the issues are worked out with the author's updated sources, I'm extremely relieved to have found a MASTER guide to all of the most important Direct3D topics in one volume.

Me lo recomendó un amigo. Lo compré y lo leí en menos de una semana, y me encantó. Actualmente hay "fila de espera", pues en mi familia se están prestando mi copia del libro. Hasta el momento, a todos les ha gustado.

Parafraseando el libro (y cambiando el título del libro) "¿cuál es tu libro favorito? Las ventajas de ser invisible, porque es el que acabo de leer." Pero, ¿acaso algún lector no puede identificarse con esa frase?

Awesome western

I loved this book. I could feel the bond between horses and men. The horses were part of them. They needed them in the daily rides for justice. This book gave me a glance at what it could have been like on the western frontier. The bonds between men and the way they lived makes for a true adventure. We must honor our forefathers and the way they and their horses lived.
