~~Incredible Continuation/Not a 'Torgon' Let Down~~

This is an incredible continuation to 'The Last Librarian'. The year is 2101 and the search is on for Grandyn Happerman. He is a TreeRunner who is wanted more than any of the others due to his past history.. It has been 3 years since the government cracked down in what is known as the Doneharvest.

The problem that a reader sometimes encounters in a continuation series is what may be called 'torgon let downs' with the plot, characters, or the action. In this one I believe there is more intense action than in the first one. The plot takes multiple twists and turns along the pages. And, the author delves more deeply into the characters so the reader understands them more. Take Grandyn, for example. Truly amazing how this character has evolved in this book. And, Munna has turned into a wealth of wisdom. She can feel the prophesies and her words ring true throughout. Her statement 'the only constant in the universe is change' fit so well in this novel. The fact that she can tap into universal consciousness speaks volumes about her. Truth is about living according to Munna and violence is not an answer. ( 'Torgon' is a word coined in this series).

How to describe this book for a prospective reader is indeed a task. First of all, there is an aspect of forgiveness that is an underlying current throughout. Some really neat tech devices will certainly keep you on the edge of your seat including one called a 'tru-chair'. The search for the books continue and there is a code that must be broken to figure out a meaning. Toss in the Imps once more along with some CHRUDEs for some added excitement.

Lots more in this one and am anxious to read the next part.

A future science fiction classic

Good science fiction creates a visual world the reader can escape into. That’s why we read. Author Brandt Legg skillfully accomplishes this. The story moves forward quickly, beginning with the first line, without any off-point rambling sidebars. Descriptions are there for the reader and not just the passing thoughts of the author (a mistake that many authors make). I had the feeling when reading The Lost TreeRunner that the author never sat down and struggled to write it. Like a great musical composition, The Lost TreeRunner is that rare work that seems as if it was born or blossomed naturally, kind of like a Beatles song. Legg creates a believable world with fascinating visual images and visionary, futuristic technology. When reading, take a moment to consider some of the futuristic technology that Legg offers as a possibility in the not-too-distant future.

Although I do recommend reading the first book in The Justar Journal series, The Last Librarian, there is enough background in the first chapter so that you don’t have to read the series in sequence. Book One focused on Grandyn’s father Runit who was literally the last librarian before the oppressive Aylantik government outlawed historical truth by outlawing libraries. Book two focuses on Runit’s son Grandyn, a TreeRunner who is brought into the revolt by the death of his father and girlfriend Vida.

I agree with what one of the other reviewers wrote about series books. Sometimes a series will start out good and become a “let down” as it progresses into subsequent books. Hunger Games is a good example. Book one was amazing, book two was good and book three was a huge “let down.” Not so with Legg’s Justar Journal series. The main character in book two is highly motivated by the death of his father and girlfriend, making him an exciting and interesting protagonist. Simply put, this fun and exciting future science fiction classic is a page turner and definitely deserves a 5-star rating.

Intense and complicated

I absolutely loved the first book, The Last Librarian. This one focuses on finding the key to understanding the prophecies after gathering all the stolen books. There is more death and violence than in the previous book, which is probably why I'm not enjoying it quite as much. There are so many players after the same thing but each with their own agenda, some of which are not entirely clear, that it can be a bit confusing.

Tons of action, tons of surprises, tons of thinking and speculating. Even more crazy technology and more human "enhancements".

Though I liked the first book better, I just purchased the third book to see how it all comes together. The series does make me wonder what our world would be like if we were less materialistic and more like Munna and Cope.

Peace must prevail, always.

Great Memoir from a Music Legend

Eddie Fisher was better-known to my generation as Carrie Fisher's father and "that guy who dumped Debbie Reynolds and ran off with Elizabeth Taylor." I ran across this autobiography in my local library, and it makes for extremely interesting reading.

Eddie bares all.....his marriages and his love affairs (I'm surprised he kept such good track of them, because it's a loooong list), his career highs and lows, his friendships and relationships with other Hollywood legends and his long addiction to drugs and alcohol. He isn't kind to Debbie Reynolds, accusing her of trying to ruin his reputation and career and keeping their children from him, which I found really crass since his account doesn't match those given by not only Debbie but by other people who knew them well. His account of his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor and how he became her nursemaid and keeper seemed rather self-pitying, but his story DOES ring true here when compared to other accounts of their relationship.

Eddie was a legend in the singing world and a star in his own right. The studio system and the manipulations of the recording industry and its agents probably contributed to most of his life mistakes: they practically owned the artist as well as their body of work. His reminiscences are a real eye-opener as well as a tabloid tell-all; he names other actors, singers, directors and political figures (including presidents) who weren't above adventures between the sheets with partners not their spouses, and who depended on recreational stimulants to help their careers along. Eddie's tell-all manages to keep a hair above the sleaze level, with his descriptions of sexual trysts and wild partying. This book is not for puritans or the little old ladies' book club!

Unfortunately Eddie, like so many stars of the film and radio golden age, ended up with little to show for his decades of work. It's shocking to learn about the rip-offs the industry made with no concern for the talent they abused. Stars didn't get the multi-million-dollar fees per film (referred to as "pictures" in that era) that they command now. Most didn't have the right to pick and choose what movies they appeared in, or what songs they sang. The studios and labels made that decision, and the star usually got a flat fee rather than percentages of sales or gross. Entertainers were taken advantage of, as Eddie was by his own personal physician and the friend who helped him get discovered all the time.

This is a great autobiography of a man whose work is largely forgotten today, yet he influenced so many singers who came after him. Well worth a read.

A more than introductory study of St John of the Cross.

This is the young Thomas Merton tackling a great Spanish mystic that he was able to read in the original language. The Sign of Jonas, another book, makes wonderful side comments about the Carmelite mystic John of the Cross but here Merton really tries to meditate and explain him. It is not always successful. Merton did not think the book a success. Nevertheless, it is a good introduction to the problem of the tension between living by faith which enlightens the mind and the experience of God which can be so blinding as to create a dark night.

A modern mystic experiences the dark night

Thomas Merton was a Benedictine friar who turned to a writing career within the monastic fold. While perhaps inevitable given his great energy and zeal (which misdirected were probably responsible for his turbulent life before he converted to Catholicism) he later used his very considerable intellectual and artistic gifts for the right end, praising God and creation, and exploring the spiritual in a world which both thirsts for it and decries it is irrelevant at the same time.

The Ascent to Truth is one of Merton's finest works, and it explores the mysticism of the 'dark night', expemplified by St John of the Cross but also by Gregory of Nyssa and Eckhart.

Merton also engages in a theological and philosophical analysis of Truth using modern scholasticism but thankfully avoids dessicating God's reality through dry concepts. Merton thirsts for God as a living reality and treats him as such, and certainly the God Merton describes is not that of the philosophers, but that of the Bible and the Christian tradition, the living 'Thou.'

He also writes with considerable insight into the modern predicament and the dangers and possible rewards of the spiritual journey, from the mirage of New Age occultism which promises much but delivers nothing, and the Christian way which demands much and appears to give nothing, but in fact gives all in return for little. The way of the Cross demands the death of the ego, and Merton is emphatic on this point as much as St John was, but not the death of the true Self, which abides in God (not in substance but in will and created good by participation).

Merton revitalises our faith in the face of arid modern and postmodern forms of nihilism and offers us the path to darkness and joy and final peace, which is only ever found in Christ and in God.

Merton's reading of John of the Cross - reason in the contemplative life

The mystical literature of John of the Cross is known for its literary beauty and spiritual profundity but it is not always accessible. The Ascent to Truth is a clear and reliable guide to understanding him. Merton's Catholic and monastic background together with his literary gifts makes him an excellent expositor of St John. Merton devotes many pages to exploring the place of reason (understood here as spiritual discernment, good sense/moderation and biblical understanding) in the mystical life. This is a helpful corrective to tendencies of some readers of John and practitioners of contemplative prayers that elevate personal experiences over the intellect, almost treating the latter as a hindrance to be bypassed. While recognising the immediacy of mystical union and the passivity of the natural faculties when one is graced with infused contemplation, one never at any point dispenses with the need to stay rooted in the concreteness of the revealed word of God and in Christ. That is to say, a sound grasp of biblical truths is essential in preparing one to receive by faith a deeper apprehension of divine mysteries that go beyond the intellect itself as one reaches out to God in love.

Besides John of the Cross, Merton also draws lessons from the other great spiritual teachers such as John Ruysbroek, Teresa of Avila, Gregory of Nyssa and others that have left us some signposts along the mystical path that help one discern where one might be in the journey, avoid some of the pitfalls and know when one is ready to advance. Though the book gets tedious at times in its seemingly repetitive circling around the book's main theme - reason in the life of contemplation, Merton delights us with some fine touches every now and then such as these:

'Contemplation is one of the indications of spiritual maturity. It is closely allied to sanctity. You cannot save the world merely with a system. You cannot have peace without charity. You cannot have order without saints. Our nature imposes on us a pattern of development which we must follow if we are to fulfil our best capacities and achieve at least the partial happiness of being human. The pattern must be understood and worked out in all its essential elements. But it can be stated very simply: We must know the truth, and we must love the truth we know, and we must act according to the measure of our love.' (pg 8)

'All the deeper instincts of a true theologian warned Saint John of the Cross that the revealed word of God offered him greater security than did experience itself, where there was question of a supernatural order in which the ways were known with certitude by Him alone who had established them.' (pg 124)

I like this book because I like it when the children/students not fighting back when they were put into jail by a police because Martin Luther King told them to fight back with words, not with their fists.

Great read aloud for Martin Luther King Jr. Day lesson

This book was a GREAT supplement to my Martin Luther King Jr. Day social studies mini -unit. The kids (higher functioning ASD) were able to follow along and understand the life as it was for African Americans then. I also used it in our Social Skills class to reinforce Theory of Mind skills.

Essential Tool For Non-Native Speakers

I will keep this short and to the point. I bought the first edition of this book back in the early 1990's and it propelled me on my way to understanding Italian at a much higher level than just interacting with the general public when I lived in Italy. I feel it is because of this book that I am often complemented by native speakers on the fact that I speak very proper Italian (I am told better than some who grow up in Italian speaking households!) I am happy to see a new edition of this book out because my first edition is well worn and it's past time for an update. I no longer live in Italy but I do use this book to keep my skills fresh. This book along with an Italian/English dictionary can help anyone learn to read, speak and understand proper Italian.

Italian Verbs

This book on Italian verbs is very comprehensive and has lots of other information that a dictionary would have, i.e. numbers, etc. I find it very helpful as a reference while I am learning Italian on audio tapes. I recommend it highly.

I will say the recommend ages are way too young

First, I will say the recommend ages are way too young; I would say Grade 9 with parent approval. This is a dark book and it does seem like the main character is being set up to be a villain as the series progresses.

That said, as an adult reader, I enjoyed this book! I liked the main character, Adelina; it's almost hard to like her because she has dark feelings but you are rooting for her to make smart choices toward light. I liked reading from a different perspective as a lot of book are from the heroine's point of view.

The Young Elites (The Young Elites #1)

Villains are usually my favorite characters in books. Call me twisted, but I love bad women/guys, characters who do anything to get their way, characters who have questionable morals and/or goals. So I should have loved THE YOUNG ELITES, because it’s supposed to be a villain’s story.

Adelina is tired of being hurt, of being used. A survivor of the mysterious blood fever, she lost an eye. One would think that would be enough, but her father has hurt and hated her for years, trying to find some value in having a malfetto for a daughter. When Adelina finds out her father is going to sell her, she escapes … and murders him in the process.

On the day of her execution, a fire already set at her feet, Adelina is rescued by the Young Elites. They are a group of malfettos with magic powers, and they want Adelina because she’s one of them. But the rescue isn’t quite what it seems, because the Young Elites want to use Adelina, as does Teren, leader of the Inquisition that nearly killed her.

All of that? Pretty promising, I’d say. But there was just something missing in THE YOUNG ELITES, something that’s very difficult for me to put my finger on. I should have flown through this book, but it took me days to finish. That’s abnormal for me, because I usually read a book a day. THE YOUNG ELITES just didn’t hold my interest. I feel like I trudged through it, and there were several points where I just wanted to put it aside. I didn’t, but only because I’d heard the ending was worth it. The ending was okay, the best part of the book for me, other than the epilogue.

Why didn’t THE YOUNG ELITES hold my interest? To start, there’s a real lack of worldbuilding for a fantasy book. The world feels a lot like Renaissance Italy, and there are lots of descriptions of buildings and pretty masks and clothing, but not of the important stuff. Where did the blood fever come from? How does magic work for the Young Elites? Adelina describes using her powers, but I didn’t quite get the idea behind the threads, or many of the powers of the other Elites. Etc.

I also never connected to Adelina. I don’t necessarily have to like a main character to like a book, but there has to be *something* about a character to grab me if the story doesn’t. I should have loved that Adelina is making steps towards being the bad guy, but she didn’t feel very developed to me. I read in the Acknowledgments that she was originally a side character, and then the author rewrote the book around her.

There’s more bad I could go on about, but I’ll stop there and just say I was underwhelmed and disappointed by this book. I expected more — I really liked Marie Lu’s first book, LEGEND, which read almost like playing a video game. If I made the same comparison, THE YOUNG ELITES read like being stuck on the loading screen.

So why 2 stars instead of 1? Because there is some cool stuff in THE YOUNG ELITES. Parts of the book are quite dark, which I usually like, and I liked that the author tried to go there. I could see promise, but there was a lack of execution/focus. I probably would pick up the next Young Elites book, but I’m crossing my fingers that it’s better.

The Young Elites is absolutely incredible

Adelina Amouteru is a malfetto, one of the children who were marked after the blood fever swept through the land. But she isn’t just a regular malfetto, she’s a Young Elite, one of those marked that came out of the blood fever with not just markings, but powers too. And now she’s being hunted for them: by Teren Santoro, leader of the Inquisition Axis who may just have a secret or two hidden under his robes, and by Enzo Valenciano, leader of the secret sect of Young Elites called the Dagger Society who seeks out others like them. Adelina has powers no one has ever seen before.

This isn’t real. This is a nightmare. This isn’t a nightmare. This is real. – page 25

HOLY CRAP, you guys! This book is freaking incredible. I kept having to put it down and take a break because it was just that good. I’ll start by talking about my favorite part: the world building. Even 25 pages in, I already had a pretty clear picture of what everything looked like, and as the book went on, the little details became clearer. It wasn’t just the city around Adelina. We were given small details about the bordering countries, so that the entire world was being painted around us. I don’t know how she does it, but Marie Lu must have entire worlds in her mind and be able to pull out even the smallest of details to add to the story. Plus her world building isn’t done in an obvious way either (some authors are like, “Here. This is what everything looks like.”). Lu does it in a completely subtle and beautiful way in which you barely notice that you now know how the city, the sky, the streets, the people look. I am definitely not doing her writing justice, but I loved it.

Her eyes are very dark, so dark that sometimes they seem wholly empty. Like he could fall to his death in them. – page 57

That quote is not about Adelina, but I’m going to talk about her now. I really liked her. She’s strong and super stubborn (super stubborn), but I liked her. I enjoyed seeing her grow into herself and her power. Adelina’s darkness was so cool and even though it’s frightening, it’s hard not to root for her.

All of the character have a purpose in this book. No one is just there. It’d probably be pretty difficult to discuss them without giving away the twists and turns in this book, of which there are several. So I’ll just say that everyone is awesome.

The ending was exciting and had me on the edge of my seat. The epilogue was crazy awesome and I seriously cannot wait for book two. I need it. Now. Please?

The bottom line: I could probably talk about this book forever. I am so impressed with it. I checked it out from the library, but I will need my own copy so I can reread it a billion times. HIGHLY recommend this one.

Rating: 9.5 – I don’t think I’ve given a 9.5 before. Basically, it means THIS IS AWESOME.
