I "WISH" I didn't buy it.

Other people's comments have said it all. It's nothing to write home about,
and certainly nothing in it that I didn't already know. I only wanted it because
Kerry Cassidy from Project Camalot.com, had a live stream interview with
Angela on her show; which, by the way, was more interesting and very
informative. Kerry totally approves of this woman and finds her very
credible. Her book, however, is a horse of a different color.

Have you ever willingly read a writing guide cover-to-cover? I have.

In the past, I've had writing guides that I've flipped through, maybe I've read a page or two if I've needed to look up a specific issue, but this is the first time I've ever read a writing guide all the way through. This guide is entertaining!

Grammar Girl, because of her training in language and in the hard sciences, understands how to explain the importance of proper usage for clarity and she also explains when sometimes rules exist out of tradition. She also explains grammar myths and how to handle people who still buy into them. Her examples are easy to understand and fun (I especially like the section on misplaced modifiers). The quick and dirty tips and the pop quizzes throughout are also fun and handy.

Other bonuses include tips that perhaps were not designed specifically to help ESL learners, but would still be immensely helpful for such students. Tips like FANBOYS and ordering adjectives, for example, are things that many native speakers take for granted, but having them described simply but completely is helpful for any user of the English language.

Also included are tips for drafting and proofreading one's own writing. Additionally, she gives tips that as a comp teacher, I've tried to drill into my students' minds, like "show, don't tell," "avoid cliches like the plague," and "you need to know if a website is credible." I am so happy I have Grammar Girl to back me up on these points.

Personal anecdote: A couple of years ago, I was teaching comma rules to a technical writing class. I was trying to explain restrictive elements and nonrestrictive elements to the class and several of the students weren't getting it. They were frustrated and I was frustrated. As I read the section in this book about restrictive elements and nonrestrictive elements, I realized that if I'd just explained it the way Grammar Girl did, a whole lot of headaches would have been prevented. This book is coming with me to school every day so that when a grammar or usage question comes up, I can simply take Grammar Girl's wording and examples to explain it much more succinctly than I am often able on my own.(It's hard to come up with sentence examples on the fly, have you noticed?)

As a teacher, I have seen many writing handbooks, most of which cost upwards of $50. This book is a delight-- not only is it the best one I've seen in that it is fun, complete, and user-friendly, but it's also truly inexpensive. I am requiring it for my college composition class this fall, and I recommend it to every high school, ESL, and college writing teacher out there. Even if you don't require it as a text, you should still have it on hand in your book bag (like me) or have a copy or two in your classroom. Your students will thank you.

Helpful tips for writers of all ages

"The Ultimate Writing Guide for Students" is divided into an introduction, five chapters, an appendix, grammar at a glance, glossary and index, among other things. The five chapters focus on parts of speech, crafting sentences, understanding punctuation, quick tips on "dirty" or confusing words, and wisdom about writing as a whole.

Pop quizzes are scattered throughout to reinforce the explanations, and Grammar Girl offers easy and fun memory tricks to help with rules.

My favorite section of the "Ultimate Writing Guide for Students," is Grammar Girl's "Quick and Dirty Tips." Listed in alphabetical order, these entries range from "affect versus effect" and "farther versus further" to "it's versus its" and "lay versus lie." These entries get to the heart of the matter quickly and are easy to understand. And, as always, Grammar Girl's wit makes finding answers to sticky questions much more enjoyable.

My one complaint is the binding. This may seem trivial to some, but I would prefer a spiral binding for greater usability. I hate having to use another book to hold my reference book open. I suggest purchasing the paperback so that it can be spiral bound at Kinko's.

Is she my twin?

I teach college students English Composition. I feel like Grammar Girl (Mignon Fogarty) took my curriculum and converted it to a book. This writing guide for students is perfect. It's written in a very logical order and in a style that students should find easy to follow. As an instructor, I love her wit and obvious enthusiasm for grammar. I know most students are not excited to read about English and its grammatical rules, but this book makes those rules fun and gives hints on how to remember them. Although the title says this book is "for students," I think anyone who communicates in written form should own it. That means you.

About the Author
David Jordan is a Senior Lecturer in the Defence Studies Department at King's College London, and is based at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, UK. Prior to this, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Modern History at the University of Birmingham. He has been Academic Director for the air power aspects of the Advanced Command and Staff Course, Departmental Director of Teaching, and is currently the Air Warfare Historian to the Higher Command and Staff Course. He is a co-director of the RAF Centre for Air Power Studies, a member of the Chief of the Air Staff's Air Power Workshop and serves on the editorial board for the RAF's Air Power Review.

Dr James D. Kiras is an Associate Professor of Strategic Studies at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Joint Special Operations University, Tampa, Florida. His first book was entitled Special Operations and Strategy: From World War II to the War on Terrorism (2006). Dr Kiras has published extensively on the subjects of irregular warfare, special operations, and terrorism.

David J. Lonsdale is Director of the Centre for Security Studies at the University of Hull. As a lecturer in strategic studies, his main area of research is strategic theory and its application to historical and contemporary strategic settings. His publications include The Nature of War in the Information Age: Clausewitzian Future (2003), Alexander the Great: Lessons in Strategy (2007) and Understanding Contemporary Strategy (2012).

Ian Speller is Senior Lecturer in Military History in the Department of History and Director of the Centre for Military History and Strategic Studies at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He also lectures at the Irish Military College and has lectured on maritime strategy and naval warfare at the UK Defence Academy and at NATO headquarters in London and Naples. He is the author of Understanding Naval Warfare (2014) and The Role of Amphibious Warfare in British Defence Policy, 1945-56 (2001), and is co-author/editor of Small Navies: Strategy and Policy for Small Navies in War and Peace (2014), Amphibious Warfare: Strategy and Tactics from Gallipoli to Iraq (2014) and The Royal Navy and Maritime Power in the Twentieth Century (2005). In addition to this, he has written numerous scholarly articles on naval history and maritime strategy.

Christopher Tuck is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Defence Studies at King's College London, and is based at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, UK. Prior to this, he was a lecturer at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He is the author of Understanding Land Warfare (2014) and Confrontation, Strategy, and War Termination (2013), co-author of Amphibious Warfare: Strategy and Tactics from Gallipoli to Iraq (2014), and co-editor of British Propaganda and Wars of Empire: Influencing Friend and Foe (2014). He has also published numerous articles and book chapters on topics including military innovation, war termination, counterinsurgency, and amphibious operations.

Dr C. Dale Walton is an Associate Professor of International Relations at Lindenwood University in St Charles, Missouri. He has published three books to date, including Grand Strategy and the Presidency: Foreign Policy, War and the American Role in the World (2012), Geopolitics and the Great Powers in the Twenty-First Century (2009) and The Myth of Inevitable US Defeat in Vietnam (2009).

Narratively, the tangles of this diplomatic story touch on France, from its abject position at the conclusion of the Seven Years War through its recovery and overweening expansion as a Napoleonic empire, culminating in its accommodation to the new state system of the congress of Vienna. Analytically, the author devotes his text to appraising that new system aborning more than the 85 years covered here, during which statesmen gradually shed balance-of-power politics for an early form of collective security. In punctilious detail, Schroeder explains the fears and aspirations--and the strategems to allay or effect them--pursued by each great power. Thus, his book is 95 percent cogitation, 5 percent action; it rushes forward for a page, then takes 10 to explain what just happened, such as the chronic question of Poland (partitioned) or the Ottoman Empire (almost so), or Napoleon and Alexander I's ill-fated Tilsit deal of 1807. Great and necessary work, but biased

"The Transformation of European Politics" has become THE standard text on diplomatic affairs of the 1763-1848. Its sweeping theses capture the reader. Where the book runs into trouble is the author's insistence on the culpability of France and Napoleon for the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. According to Schroeder the British and their allies were willing to accept French domination of Western Europe but Napoleon never accepted any limits to his goals and embarked on a campaign of World Conquest. Anything the Brits did to organize coalitions to destroy France was only in response to French aggression, etc. And the Congress of Vienna was the greatest human achievement since man learned to write, despite the fact that it stiffled the development of democracy in Europe. In particular I noticed points where Schroeder selectively uses arguments of older historians, but then fails to use arguments of the same historians which contradict his thesis (Albert Sorel for one). An important work, even if you need to argue against it.

Important Work

This somewhat dense but well written book is the standard work on European international politics in this period. In many ways a fairly traditional diplomatic history, Schroeder provides a detailed and thoughtful narrative of diplomatic manuvering and the political aspects of wars in the period leading up to the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars themselves, the nature of the post-Napoleonic settlement, and European diplomacy from 1815 to 1848. The Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars are a particular focus; out of 17 chapters, 10 are devoted to the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars.

The narrative is detailed and quite readable, though many of the events described are fairly complex. What really distinguishes this book are some of Schroeder's broad interpretations. One important interpretation, which I believe is now accepted generally by historians of this period is that Revolutionary-Napoleonic France would have been accepted by the European state system if not so unremittingly aggressive. Other themes pursued throughout the book are the particular difficulties of the Austrian empire and the emergence of Britain and Russia as geographically peripheral but hegemonic powers. Schroeder's most important interpretation, however, is his argument, reflected in the title, about the metamorphosis of the European state system.

Schroeder argues convincingly that the Napoleonic wars produced a decisive and beneficial change in the European state system. The latter is construed quite broadly as it includes the Ottoman empire and there were connections with the USA and even Persia. Schroeder describes the 18th century balance-of-power system as an instrinsically unstable zero-sum that promoted aggression by the major powers and in which smaller states were continual victims. The experience of great conflict, particularly that provoked by Napoleon, produced a distinctly different system in which great powers restrained themselves in potential conflicts that could produce war, territorial borders were generally respected, and the security of weaker states was respected as essential to to providing buffers between larger states. Schroeder makes this argument quite convincingly and points to the relative success of the Congress of Vienna and the relative durability of European peace up to the 1840s as evidence of the strength of the new system. As a corollary, Schroeder argues also that it is incorrect to see the Congress of Vienna settlement as an attempt to turn back the clock and restore the ancien regime.

While Schroeder's broad interpretation is convincing, there are some limitations in the nature and presentation of his analysis. Because of the unavoidably complex narrative, there is something of a forest for the trees problem for readers in appreciating the evidence for Schroeder's argument. Perhaps more important, Schroeder's narrative tends to omit what may be some important features that probably contributed to the transformation of the state system. One of the reasons for the change of the state system was that these were different states. Led by the French state, this period sees a considerable increase in state power, including war capacity via conscription. In some states, international politics becomes more entangled in domestic politics, somewhat different from the more dynastic nature of most 18th century states. Readers interested in an interesting overview of the changes in European states resulting from the Napoleonic wars should look up Michael Broers interesting book on this topic.

A truly refreshing look into the evolution of European diplomatic history from dynastic politics to cabinet politics to Realpolitik.

A refreshing look into Napoleon as a bumbling egomaniac a captain of the art of war in a sea of mediocrity, and an evil empire builder, despotic and neopotic. A pillager, liar, and bungler who was courting disasters in his every endeavours, only to be saved by his more incompetent, moronic adversaries.

Schroeder also blasts the system of the balance of power amongst the Great Powers (Britain, Prussia, Russia, Austria, France) as leading to instability, partitions and war, all at the expenses of less powers like Danmark, Poland, Ottoman Empire etc. as each of the Great Powers angled to tilt the balance to its favour.

About the Author
Paul Thompson A seasoned make-up artist and instructor in all aspects of professional make-up artistry with over seventeen years of experience; twelve of which has been spent in the classroom helping students become professional make-up artists. Paul started his career in the late 1980's representing a cosmetic line and creating puppets for small industrial films, eventually moving on to feature films and commercials. From there, he started his own special make-up effects lab, Creature Creations, which has since become Mud/fx Group. As his career turned to teaching, Paul also co-founded Make-up Designory. Serving as the Director of Education, he was resposible for the development of the training program.

Excellent comprehensive book

I love this book, and I have been using it in my makeup classes for several years. The full color photos are easy to follow, the techniques in the book are up to date and reasonably easy to replicate. Highly recommended!

I like this - substantial without being pretentious and over done. Keep It Simple(kiss) mindset I think.

I liked it. This is a textbook. I would love to get my hands on a more recent publication if there was one to be had. I teach cosmetology. I buy every text I can find from any used bookstores, amazon, etc. This is classic. It isn't beautiful pictures and great photography. It is black and white and gray illustrations that have arrows and labels pointing to the exact spot referenced in the text. This book does well to explain the why, the how, and what a person needs to practice in order to develop and/or refine their skills.

The book any CIO should read to dive into MDM

This book is a great compendium of current technology and business issues around MDM and CDI, with a foreword from Aaron Zornes. It provides an expert view on business drivers, architectural approaches and implementation issues. It is worth mentioning the chapter on Vendors Landscape where the authors review current market players competitive advantages. Easy to read for both business and IT managers and it has very interesting appendixes with glossary included! The book any CIO and Business Executive should read to be aware of whats going on in the MDM field.
