This book showcases stunningly realistic and wonderfully posed models and dioramas depicting various characters and scenes from science fiction and horror cinema. The models and dioramas are presented in chronological order starting with the silent films from 1910 to 1927, then the classic films from the 1930s and 1940s, including Universal Studios' Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolf Man franchises. Next are the many radiation induced mutants and invaders from outer space of the 1950s, followed by offerings from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Hammer Films are included as well as the Mummy movies and Universal's Gillman series. A detailed explanation of the nitty-gritty of model and diorama building is presented and particular details unique to each piece are shown in close-ups and discussed. The figures are of unprecedented artistry.

Was hoping for better

Mark Glassy's Movie Monsters in Scale is, it seems to me, a good book for people who are into, or are looking to get into, making models and dioramas as a serious hobby. The preface and introduction provide good biographical background on Mr. Glassy and explain his love for the subject. It has page after page full of tips and tricks learned through decades of trial and error as well as a bit of history on the manufacture of model kits. Glassy is also the person who has assembled and painted all of the pieces presented despite having no formal artistic training. The only valid criticisms I can level at this book are; 1) that in much of the book the articles/captions are increasingly separated from the accompanying pictures, which had me bouncing back and forth between multiple pages; and 2) that a book in which visuals are so important, the majority of the pictures are in black and white. I understand publishing budget constraints but a book that is seemingly presented as a sort of large format "coffee table picture book" should present the art in it's full glory!

A monster of a book!
By Michelle Souliere
While I am not a hobby model maker, I have long been a fan of the old B-movie scifi and horror culture from which the movie monster modeling tradition has drawn from for decades. Reading "Movie Monsters in Scale" by Mark C. Glassy was a real treat. Mark Glassy is a world-class obsessive modeler, and this book is a thorough and engrossing immersion in his collection.

What makes a book about modeling so interesting, even for a non-modeler? For one thing, the passion -- Glassy so clearly loves and enjoys what he is doing, and his subject matter, that it is contagious. I almost found myself considering picking up a few kits to try my hand at the process after reading this, and I am a confirmed look-but-don't-make fan of the field.

For another thing, Glassy approaches the subject from the ground up, so that even a newbie like me understands the tenets that form the foundation of this skill set. He doesn't take it for granted that you know what he's talking about before he explains it.

Finally, Glassy spends a portion of his time identifying the particularly gripping elements of the movies from which each model is drawn, whether the focus is the set design, the actors' signature moment of pathos or terror, or the monster design itself. He is a detail oriented man, and it's not long before readers find themselves paying attention to all the details too.

While model making at its best pays homage to the infinitesimal ingredients that make up a scene, there is another level of skill involved that must draw itself back far enough to see the larger picture. Glassy is not only invested in the details - he is also dedicated to creating a real scene out of each piece, in which handmade props and scenery elements are crafted to make each model into a unique piece of art far beyond what 8-year-old Jimmy might have glued together in his garage after Saturday morning cartoons.

This is a level of interest in customization that any hobbyist can appreciate. That Glassy has taken the time to carefully document his three-dimensional art and point out details for the reader is a gift to fans everywhere. It's like having a guided tour of the epic collection that he has custom built over the decades, ever since the modeling bug bit him.

The book is oversized at 8 ½ by 11 inches, a true commitment to the contents. The text is liberally peppered with large photos of the various dioramas, some of which in real life are over 2 feet long and over a foot tall and deep, others of which do not exceed a square foot in size. While the majority of the photos are in black and white, they are reproduced with an eye to detail, so you don't really feel like you're missing out, especially when you add the treat of twenty-four color pages inserted into the volume!

My only complaint with this volume is that the images do not always line up with the text that describes them, leaving you to flip back and forth between pages to align them in your mind. But really, I've read far less interesting books that force you to do the same thing - here, it's worth the effort!

In summary, the book is a delight for monster and B-movie fans alike, as well as hobby modelists. Beyond the enjoyment of reading Glassy's account of each piece, there is good practical information here for the hobbyist, too. There are clearly written sections following the introduction which go into detail about materials and techniques, and the entire book is indexed at the end, making it an excellent resource for future reference. All this well-compiled material comes from the man who is the inventor of the first human antibody used to treat cancer patients. His immunology work against cancer continues to this day. I have to admit he has certainly earned whatever time he spends on his model art!

The Days of being a monster kid!
By Tim Janson
Monster kids, those kids who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s are very familiar with monster model kits. Who didn’t have Aurora or Revell model kits back in the day. While acting as an homage to those great kits of that era, Mark C. Glassy kits is actually aimed at garage kit enthusiasts. The Garage Kit hobby took off in the mid-1980s as fans literally began molding their own kits in their garages or basements. So popular was the hobby that magazines like The Amazing Figure Modeler began popping up to service the burgeoning industry.

Soon there were a dozen or so manufacturers of these kits like Horizon, Monsters in Motion, Screamin’, Halcyon, and Resin Crypt. Glassy, who holds a PhD in biochemistry, traces the origins of the GK industry and also provides details on the creation process for aspiring modelers. He also goes into all the details you need in terms of your tools, paints, glues, putty and clays, electronics, and more.

Next Glassy takes the reader on a step-by-step instructional tour of molding your model, pinning and gluing the pieces together, sanding, building dioramas, painting, color and effects, and displaying. Now this makes up the first 30 pages of the 200+ page book. The bulk of it takes a look at hundreds of garage kits featuring fantastic photography.

Glassy sorts these in chronological order, beginning with the kits that covered the silent age of horror and sci-fi. Glassy first gives notes about the film that the kit is based on and then provides the kit credits: Sculptor, manufacturer, and details on how each piece was created. The silent era films covered include classics such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Nosferatu, and The Phantom of the Opera.

From there we move into the Universal classic horror films of the 1930s and 1940s: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Bride of Frankenstein, etc…next is the classic sci-fi films of the 1950s like The Day the Earth Stood Still, War of the Worlds, The Thing from Another World, and Them!

You cannot help but marvel at the incredible skill of these artists and sculptors. Whether you are a modeling fan or just a fan of the films, this is a gorgeous book to own.
