About the Author

Robert P. Pangrazi is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Arizona State University. Professionally, he has served as an elementary teacher, a university teacher and researcher and as a university administrator. Pangrazi is an Honor Fellow of the AAHPERD and a Fellow in the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and the North American Society. He was honored by NASPE with the Margie Hanson Distinguished Service.

 

Pangrazi has also authored Dynamic Physical Education for Secondary School Children, now in its 5th edition (Benjamin Cummings, 2006) with Paul W. Darst. He has written 43 other textbooks, served as editor of three professional journals, produced five professional 16mm films, a series of educational videotapes, and two fitness-related videos for national television and authored more than 85 research/journal articles. Robert Pangrazi has been the keynote speaker for 32 state and district conventions, delivered three international presentations and presented approximately 200 speeches at the local, state, and national level. Pangrazi’s research focuses on promoting physical activity for youth.

Birth of Mass Politics in Egypt

This is a solid work of scholarship, and serves a nice supplement to Mitchell's more expanded work. However, given that the new information handled by B. Lia offers merely a refinement of our understanding of the Brotherhood rather than a radical revision, one is recommended to rather begin with Mitchell-whose book is available in paperback, is more established, and is a fraction of the cost. Contrary to D. Pipes' and others' reviews, Mitchell's work does not portray the Muslim Brotherhood as reactionary. This rhetorical device of point, counter-point does considerable injustice to Mitchell's work.
Standing on its own, this work is well written and easy to follow. Lia is able to delve into the mechanics of the organization on a social and political level in order to reveal just how it reached the amount heights of success that it did. The result is a picture that explains well why it was a model so extensively copied and exported throughout the Muslim world. If there is any comparison to be made to Mitchell's work, this would certainly be the proper feature to focus on. Overall, Lia gives a much more lucid, detailed account of the Muslim Brother as a social organization and makes a convincing case for the organization being the first grass-roots political movement in Egypt with its origins and leadership from the poorer classes [unlike the Wafd]. What is lost, however, is comprehensive picture of the whole-and this due partly to the limited time frame of the study-wherein the Brotherhood's other distinguishing features [e.g., its religiosity, transformation during political persecution, etc.] are obfuscated.

"The best known study of Egypt's foremost fundamentalist Islamic movement, Richard Mitchell's Society of the Muslim Brothers (1969) portrayed the organisation as a reactionary response to Westernization mounted by those left in its wake ... Now, however, a thoroughly different (and much improved) interpretation rules, one that sees the Muslim Brothers and like movements as a facet of modernization. Their personell are urbanites dealing with the cutting edge of modern problems; their ideas, methods, and goals all incorporate modern ways; and they show far more willingness to learn from the West than was hitherto realized.
In a very impressive research effort into the early years of the Muslim Brothers, Lia (a Norwegian scholar) relies on new sources and deep knowledge of his subject to show convincingly just how well that movement does fit the new interpretation. He establishes that it organized in ways novel for Egypt and mobilized elements of the population hitherto neglected. But its greatest importance lay in developing an answer to the rampant European ideologies of the 1930s: in this, the Muslim Brothers began "a lasting process of renewal .. in which religion was related to the modern age and all aspects of modern life." With justification, Lia concludes that the Muslim Brothers' reinterpretation of Islam will remain 'the most far-reaching Islamic renewal this century' ".

"Lia's book provides a fresh reassessment of the growth of the Muslim Brothers. He does so by drawing on a wealth of recently discovered documents, including the Society's own internal publications from the 1930s and '40s, British intelligence reports and al-Banna's personal letters.
While touching on issues of ideology and anti imperialism, Lia places great emphasis on the Society's structure and its activities within Egypt to explain its early phenomenal growth. Rather than a reaction to modernity, he argues that the Society itself was a modern organization, open to new technologies and ideas. (..)
The violence and radicalism within the organization prove to be among the thorniest issues in the book. While the Muslim Brothers provided the organizational model for today's radical Islamic groups, to some extent they also provided the template of violence. Lia argues that the Society, while calling for an all-Islamic "struggle" on various occasions, was not inherently violent. The Muslim Brothers did have a military wing, the so-called Special Section, but this, he says, was a way to channel the radical energies of the more energetic younger members. This element of violence can be traced back to a split within the Muslim Brothers in 1939. As a reaction to al-Banna's accommodationist political activity, a group calling itself the Society of Our Master Muhammad's Youth split off from the main organization. Throughout the next decades, this group would continue to splinter, creating the network of violent Islamic groups which plagued Egypt today (..) Lia argues that the growing radicalism resulted from government efforts to shut these Islamic groups out of the Egyptian political system. Lacking a legitimate outlet for their energies, he argues, these groups can easily turn to the option of terrorism.

Lia limits his study from the beginning of the Society until 1942 (..)Numerous issues of interst arose in the Society's history after this period from the involvement of the Muslim Brothers in the 1948 war against Israel to the 1949 assassination of al-Banna and Nasser's eventual outlawing of the Society. A wider study would further consider the development of violence within the Muslim Brothers and its splinter groups and offshots. One can only hope that Lia has plans for a companion volume"

A beautiful book about finding healthy sugar alternatives and loving what you eat

A bright and summery cookbook, Cut the Sugar, You're Sweet Enough offers beautiful pictures and diverse recipes. Cut the Sugar does not set out to promote removing sugar completely from your life. Instead it helps readers find sugar alternatives, creating sweet food that is nutritious and replacing the bad sugary things with healthy and enjoyable sweets.

I have watched the quit-sugar craze arrive and seen how colleagues and friends have cut sugar completely from their diets. Many have stuck with it, others succumb to cravings, while others simply can't manage the restrictions a sugar-free diet imposes. I, on the hand, have continued to eat my regular, balanced, mainly healthy but defiantly not sugar-free diet. I haven't read the quit sugar books that sit on our library shelf nor have I watched any sugar-is-killing-us documentaries. I would rather enjoy my sweets in naive bliss. But when I heard about this book, a book about reducing sugar but still enjoying the sweet side of life, I was very intrigued. I was not disappointed. While Ella Leche's level of diet restriction is well out of my range of dedication, it does offer some practical tips for reducing bad sugar intake and replacing it with healthy and nutritious sugar intake.

Cut the Sugar begins with a message from Ella describing her journey with illness, food and health. An introduction to a variety of healthy basic ingredients, such as superfood, grains and seeds, healthy fats, protein sources, gluten-free flours, and sugar alternatives follows.

All the recipes are plant based and gluten free. There are also some that are also egg and dairy free. There is some sugar in these recipes, particularly the desserts and some snacks. But that's the point! You can eat some sugar, just from different sources and in smaller quantities. The sugar sources range from coconut palm sugar and stevia, to Medjool dates and rice malt syrup.

While some recipes are straight out of the I'm so healthy, you can only buy these ingredients in extremist health shops, others are simple and pure genius. A cookie made solely from mashed banana and oats!!

The recipes are organised by section. Firstly, there are breakfast recipes, such as the caramelised onion, leek and potato chickpea frittata that is egg free. A great range of salads follows, which have plenty of nuts, seeds and beans. Soups are next, and range from the refreshing to the surprising, such as the brussels sprout, pea and fresh dill soup or the hearty miso soup. The mains section provides hearty meals that are wheat, diary and meat free, like the zucchini noodles with spinach pesto or the chickpea flatbread pizza. This leads onto the dessert section, where there is everything from the simple mixed berry crumble pots, to raw brownies with chocolate ganache. I was intrigued by the cinnamon and rooibos cake, which uses spelt flour, brewed rooibos tea and applesauce. The snack section follows including protein bars, turnip the beet chips, multiseed bread, and flax crackers. And finally there is a drink section with a variety of smoothies.

A lot of the recipes in this book seem less like a reduced-sugar cookbook and more like one that is for people with allergies or intolerances. Take the diary-free cashew cheese ball for example. But anyone will enjoy these fresh meals, even if they want to add a side of chicken, beef or wheat pasta.

Most of the fat content in the baking recipes is sourced from coconut oil. If you're not a convert of this trend you can always switch the quantities to another oil. Also, milk alternatives such as almond or hemp milk could be switched to whatever type of milk you drink. I think I'll also be skipping the hemp, milk or seeds, as it is illegal to eat in Australia. I would have liked a little more detail in the alternative ingredients section, such as disadvantages to some of these ingredients, their origins or why it is best to use them rather than other alternatives. For example, coconut oil is cited as the fat of choice, but despite the claimed benefits there is no mention of it being high in saturated fats. There is also an extensive index, which is grouped by ingredients as well as finished product.

Overall, this is a very beautiful book. It would make a great gift and the perfect accompaniment to any kitchen library.

A reasonable approach to sugars.

My sweet tooth is notorious in my social circles. I lose all shame when it comes to snagging the last donut or cookie. I never turn down a second slice of pie or scoop of ice cream. Most people keep office supplies in their desk drawer. I keep gum and candy. And like most addicts I go through cycles of wanting my drug of choice out of my life only to get low and fall back into its loving arms.

Most books I've encountered pretty much demand cutting out all sugars and I'm pretty sure if I did that my system would be shocked so bad I'd be sick. But the approach of Cut the Sugar, You're Sweet Enough surprised me. The emphasis on quality food that provides much needed nourishment without added sugars instead of eliminating all sugars seems far more reasonable and healthy, not to mention easier to sustain in the long term.

I was really impressed with the recipes because I really thought most of them would be boring and full of hard to find ingredients. Instead, they include lots of delicious naturally sweet whole foods like dates and sweet potatoes and ones that can provide the creamy texture many sweets have like avocado.

While I don't anticipate cutting my favorite sweets out of my diet any time soon, for the first time I feel like someone out there has a way to still enjoy the sweet life without allowing for the fact that food can and sometimes should be a pleasure.

I love the approach of "Cut the Sugar" because if you're anything like me, cutting sugar out completely is IM-POSS-I-BLE. I just can't go without sweets! My biggest problem is breakfast. I always want something sweet for breakfast. Thankfully, Ms. Leche makes it easier with these recipes - including some awesome recipes for BREAKFAST! I definitely believe that there is a link between the food we eat, including sweets, and our health. I think that cutting back on the amount of sugar that we eat isn't just a wise choice, but it's something that, honestly, we all must do in order to maintain proper health. It's not easy, but it's not quite as difficult thanks to recipes like this one for Chocolate Dipped Biscotti!

a great story of a courageous young man

I was pleased to meet Abdullah Barka on the Istanbul metro near Taksim in June, 2014. He is a friendly soul. He told me about his book, and I'm glad that he did....his was an incredible journey that started against his will....but succeeded because of great will power.

Too short

Herr Dihle's book contains some interesting critical appreciations; its chief fault is that it is simply too brief to do justice to such a huge subject. Dihle's book is only 344 pages; by contrast, Gian Biagio Conte's "Latin Literature," which I consider an exemplary model for the entire literary history genre, is 864 pages. Any really big subject deserves big scale treatment, and that's why Dihle's short book is somewhat disappointing. Of course, its very brevity might make it appealing to readers who dislike tackling a big, heavy book; but you have to wonder: would any such anemic readers be interested in ancient Greek literature in the first place? (The earlier Greek literary history by Albin Lesky is both longer and, not coincidentally, much better.)

Much better to read the original

As with so much academic writing, this book is about its subject, but captures little of the feel of it. Much better to read the original, translated Greek literature itself.
