born for Shakespeare...
By Kerry O. Burns
some men are born for greatness..others aspire to it. Laurence Olivier was a man born for the stage and for Shakespeare. He found his fame through the Bard's plays, speaking the words as if as naturally as he were thinking them at the moment. This beautiful book takes you inside his world of make believe and never talks down to you but you see the world as he sees it. He did it with grace, elegance and a touch of class. He writes of his life long friendship with Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud and other notable stars. Read this book, then watch some of his finest films, "Wuthering Heights", "King Lear", "Richard III", "Marathon Man", "Spartacus", "The Entertainer", "49th Parallet". Truly one of generations legendary actors.
"I don't know what is better than the work that is given to the actor -- to teach the human heart the knowledge of itself." [January 1970]

Brutally honest autobiography
By Loretto Leary
As a teenager I had such a crush on Laurence Olivier it was unbelievable. That crush served me well though, as the majority of Olivier's work was Shakespearean in nature. If I wanted to see him on film, I'd have to watch Hamlet, Othello or, the movie that really got me hooked on him, not Shakespearean, Rebecca.
Olivier's autobiography is an introduction into the life style of an actor. I had imagined Olivier was an upperclass gent all of his life, easing his way through life because of his looks, intelligence, talent and his money. The truth is, he wasn't from the upper class and his behavior, at times, was far, far, far from moral high ground. The book Laurence Olivier, Confessions of an Actor made someone I had thought of as godlike, human.
Instead of creating his own fictional past, Olivier was brave enough to share scenarios from his own private life that left the reader to decide what kind of man he really was.
From his humble beginnings, to a disapproving father who did not want `Larry' to become an actor, to his infidelities and tumultuous marriage to Vivian Leigh, Olivier faces them head on.
I read this book almost 30 years ago. And to this day, one line remains prominent in that book. I was shocked when I read it. You see, when two movie stars get together, like Leigh and Olivier, two beautifully talented people, it isn't always `happy ever after.' At a time when his marriage to Leigh was at a low, due to extra marital affairs on both sides, the line, "I tried to f..k our marriage back into existence," made me realise that Laurence Olivier was like Hamlet and Othello, a flawed human being. But aren't we all?

The Prequel To "On Acting." The Master Shares Details Of The Man Behind The Actor.
By HAMLET
Sir Laurence Olivier imparts to us the intimate details of his personal life, before he became the great Shakespearean actor we all know so damn well. He shares his reflections on what he did in his life and what he regrets. No one could do this with more grace and humor than the Master Of The Bard. Rated PG for thematic elements and some language.
