juvenile at best

I was looking forward to reading this as it popped up on a search for Pepper Pace (how or why I couldn't tell you) and had a lot of five star reviews. The protagonist clearly did not want to identify with being black, and had a lot of self-hating going on. In a moment in America where black women are winning, I was disappointed that Red was Sao consumed with self-loathing. I get that she was Creole, but why reference her as black so much if she couldn't identify with ANY type of black experience. There are wealthy, educated blacks that embrace their identity and are NOT self-haters. Even her marrying Jon while I get that it was bad intentioned from all perspectives as part of the plot, it really felt like she wanted to marry some unattainable white man and be accepted as white in his social circles, but was scared of rejection. The odd thing was her white male love interest was devoid of any of those issues almost like because he was white he was right. Red seemed like a white woman (who hates black women), trapped in a black woman's body. Really weird to read something like this in 2014. I couldn't help hoping that the author gets a therapist to help her work through whatever black self-hate she has. Yes, not all black people listen to hip hop and many love alternative/rock but it should be clear in this day and age musical taste does define the black experience. Another thing, invest in an editor.

Beware of "74" 5 star ratings

This has to be the most annoying book, that I have read in a really long time. Because of all of the 5 star ratings. I was expecting a great read. Instead I got misplaced words, missing words. Sentences that didn't make sense. And the most annoying writing style. Was I the only one who didn't know where they were most of the time. The locale changed from paragraph to paragraph. The story concept okay, hence the 1 star. Will I buy this author again. Never.

My favorite book of 2013

I loved this book I read it in one day, it was an excellent story the best book I've read this year. It was sweet & funny, it had an unexpected twist at the end, I loved every chapter I could NOT PUT IT DOWN. Every character was real, and I can honestly say I know someone like that, which made it even better. Please keep writing. Amazing. On my list of favorites, I think I can read it again and again.
